2.0 out of 5 stars 15 Minutes of Good Swing Trading Advice, November 12, 2007
By
Derek Harmon (Princeton, NJ USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've attended an Oliver Velez talk (on Core Trading) before and was impressed by how well he conveys his ideas, how well they are thought out, and to some extent Pristine's technical methodologies (different tools for different trading timeframes) are not just the same-old, same-old. Velez is all about the charts, so you'll hear nothing about fundamentals like P/E multiple. I'm not disappointed with the Swing trade secret Oliver unveils in this roughly hour-long video of a talk he gave at the NY Marriott, and he crystallizes the market psychology this trading strategy targets very effectively with the greater-fool scenario of how prices are reached in the market.

But the reviews that criticize the production quality of this video series are on target, and in this particular video's case it is compounded by overhead projector transparencies (anyone remember those, from the 80's?) Yes, every slide is a hard-to-read-on-video projector transparency.

You don't really need to read that much, besides rising or falling chart patterns, but you'll find yourself taking notes on what he says about his trade criteria because you can't read the print on the transparencies.

About two-thirds of the video are basic material, such as understanding how a candle is depicted. If you have any technical trading experience whatsoever, you'll find the video could easily be cut down to 15 minutes or so (and even if you are a complete beginner, the graphics covering this material is probably better anyplace else but here).

Now, these ideas sell for $3500 when you learn intensively in training Velez's firm offers. A one hour glimpse into them sells for $99 on this DVD. So what you're willing to pay for THIS IDEA which may revolutionize your trading results, will vary from person to person I'm sure. I admit I got this from the "bargain bin" (firesale, actually) so I think I found a good deal, but if you must pay an inflated price you have a greater risk of buyer's regret.

If you ever get a chance to attend an Oliver Velez talk at a trading expo, I recommend him.

2.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat Disappointing, November 26, 2003

This review is from: Swing Trading with Oliver Velez [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Despite the raving reviews regarding this tape, I found it not to be as good as all the hype. I was expecting a longer session. It was just too short. Mr. Velez is a great speaker, who only gave small snippet of information regarding his methods. I was under the impression that this tape was a full seminar. No such luck. It was like a tease to get someone to buy his full, workshop for thousands of dollars. For the most part, it was extremely basic, covering investing material (What is a trend? And ,What are candle stick charts?) which is readily available at most FREE financial sites. Half the time the charts weren't shown as he discussed them. I did however, come away with a miniscule piece of the "swing trading pie" (a $50 piece), which may, or may not be helpful in future trades. In fact, with incomplete information, my trading may be at more risk. Hey, you get what you pay for. Buyer beware!

5.0 out of 5 stars TRULY BENEFICIAL TO TRADERS, July 6, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Swing Trading with Oliver Velez [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Velez starts by showing the difference between the various types of day trading methods and then shows how to apply his techniques in the Swing trading fashion. His examples truly helped me apply what I learned the next trading day. I've watched this tape numerous times, and I always gain an additional nugget out of seeing it again. Because of the high price, I bought it from the "used" vendor and it turned out that the vendor gets his lower priced ones directly from the distributor--so it was brand new. In addition, you can download written materials that go along with the tape which really make it a great value. Along with Velez' Swing Trading, I also recommend CORE TRADING and MICRO TRADING--which I also bought. To Mr. Velez, I want to say a tremendous "Thank You" for your lucid and concise presentations!
