5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Big Band Jazz from one of the great Trumpeters, September 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Swingin the Blues (Audio CD)
Doc has hit the mark big time with a ferocious, tight, swinging, and wailing album of big band blues. The charts (by Tommy Newsome and John Bambridge) are superb, and the band responds by playing the hell out of them. Some of the out- standing soloists include Ernie Watts, Ed Shaugn essy, Snooky Young , and of course Doc. As for the aforementioned, he is playing extremely well. Check out his solo work on "West End Blues" --- he is one of the handful of truly great trumpet players. Another highlight is Bill Holman's sizzling arrangement of "C Jam Blues" - this kicks off the album and will knock your socks off!!! In summary, this is an important album which should not be forgotten when the Grammys are announced. Doc and the band do them- selves proud with this one. Don't miss it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Swingin' Blues Lover from down South, December 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Swingin the Blues (Audio CD)
Doc is THE BEST! with lots of swing in blues style. The addition of a vocalist makes it truly a classic for all true blues fans. The whole CD keeps you swinging with Ellington and Tommy Newsom greats. There is NO music like it anytime or anywhere!

5.0 out of 5 stars Doc Severinsen Can Do A Lot More Than Blues, February 2, 2001

This review is from: Swingin the Blues (Audio CD)
If there ever was an album worth giving a cookie over to Amazon, this is it.

Amazon found out I liked Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Frank Sinatra from the '50s, even Lawrence Welk 22 Big Band Favorites.

Amazon found out I liked the "Tonight Show Band" Volume 1 and then Volume 2.

"Doc" has got Dixie, he's got ragtime, he knows about gospel, and he obviously has studied everything beginning with Duke Ellington and from there on.

This album has a LOT of the sheer glory of BRASS but it also has a LOT of the glory of DRUMS and many other things (such as vocalists).

With this album from Doc, the Big Bands have come of age! Big Bands have all grown up and are yours for the taking.
