5.0 out of 5 stars I can't believe I am first to rate this 60's Euro Modal classic, November 14, 2008

This review is from: Swingin Macedonia (Audio CD)
This s seminal album in 60's European Jazz.Led by Yugoslavian Trumpet/Flugelhorn mast Dusko Goykovich it is and album of modal free wheeling post bop treats from 1965 that just makes you say "Damn!" after hearing it for 30th time.Local compatriots of Yugoslavia scene are bolstered here by multi-reedist greats Nathan Davis on Tenor and Soprano. The incomparable Mal Waldron,so flexible, here just gives his best. But it is the sum of the parts that make this the classic collectors gladly pay $300+ to get an original of.Really stupefyingly beautiful this yet another small group session that has it's links to Clarke-Bollan big Band (of which Dusko played).Though he had many great LP's his first as a leader was his best.If you dig this check out nominally led Benny Bailey "Soul Eyes:Live At The Domicile In Munich" which also has Davis and Waldron. At same time check out Davis's classic SABA LP's "Happy Girl" and "Hip Walk".But this was the birth of a star which is "all killah no fillah".A stone classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars And I can't believe I am only the second reviewer 3 yrs later, November 6, 2011
This review is from: Swinging Macedonia (Audio CD)
--although considering this seems to have gone out of print, maybe to be expected.

The previous reviewer said it much more technically and with more background info than I will, but this album is really great. Great musicians, great tunes, great feel for the old E Euro folk tunes that have been jazz-ified, great solos, and great ensemble together-ness. They love what they are doing and chances are you will too. I recommend Dusko's album Soul Connection, which I like even more. I saw him play in a small club in the middle of nowhere in the countryside in Japan, and it was a great show. He couldn't believe he was in the middle of the rice fields in Japan and the cafe owner had somehow gotten nearly all of his original work on vynil, stuff that Dusko didn't couldn't even get and didn't have apparently. Anyway he sat and talked with us and was a really great guy and humble and encouraging to younger folk (I was 21). I wish I'd known more about jazz and his background to ask him at that time. It was at that show I got Soul Connection.

A few years later I got Swinging Macedonia which had just been re-released on cd. If they are going out of print, I wish I had bought more of his cps then. I only have the two. Don't know which I like better, actually.
