Yes, this is a collection of 'new' recordings. Yes, it is performed by alumni of the Glenn Miler Orchestra. But NO, it was not recorded in 2011. This is a combined collection of two separate CDs, IN THE CHRISTMAS MOOD and IN THE CHRISTMAS MOOD II, originally released on the LaserLight label in 1992 and 1993, respectively. If you have those two recordings, then you have everything that's on this compilation. If you don't, and you like big band music, then definitely buy this. It's great!

The brief liner notes suggest that Glenn Miller would have recorded a Christmas album if he had survived World War 2. His band only recorded one Christmas song while he was band leader (Jingle bells, re-recorded here), but it is reasonable to think that he might have done a whole album. The Glenn Miller Orchestra have certainly kept alive the spirit of the original band, with the most obvious difference being the vocalists, partly because they aren't used quite as much as they were by Glenn, partly because they are all competent singers and partly because the two women here do most of the singing even though the vocal backing group includes three men. Glenn's best singer was Marion Hutton, but he gave more opportunities to Ray Eberle and Tex Beneke.

Glenn Miller wasn't very fussy about singers, thinking that the important thing was to employ the best instrumentalists. He was proved right as his records outsold those by other bands despite their often superior singers. Nevertheless, Glenn Miller is mainly remembered these days for his instrumental recordings, and that may be why most of the tracks are instrumentals. The singers do well when given the opportunity. Indeed, one of the vocal tracks, There's no place like home for the holidays, is my favorite, although there's a long instrumental introduction before the singing starts.

The songs and tunes featured are all old enough that Glenn Miller himself would have known most of them. I think at least one (Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow) post-dates his death but not by much. If Glenn had survived to record a Christmas album, he would certainly have become familiar with it, Some of the songs and tunes are incorporated into medleys.

Thoroughly enjoyable...as a Baby Boomer I possess vague remembrances of hearing some of these versions as a youngster - they bring back pleasant memories.

Nothing reminds me more of Christmas than the big band music of WWII.
This double disc was recorded last year with only members of the Glenn Miller alumni of the past 25 years. All of Miller's hits are intertwined into a cavalcade of great xmas songs. What I mean is, the new arrangements are all Xmas, but the hits of the 40's are subliminally represented within the holiday music.
I thought this would be a low budget remastering of 40's Xmas music, but it's not.
It's great stuff recorded in 2011 and recorded well. Thanks to whomever came up with this idea. I hope it sells well because it should!
