Book Description

September 22, 2004
Swinging Sisters is a one-of-a-kind book, because there is no other story like it.

Come along for the ride with a Depression era all-girl band as they tour the country in a 1928 Packard hearse. The Texas Rangerettes garner headlines in Variety and Billboard for several years before taking a fork in the road that subsequently has Paramount Studio cameramen camping on the women's doorstep hoping to film a history-making event featuring four band members.

Based on a true story, Swinging Sisters celebrates the life of a family rooted in the Irish famine who achieves success and happiness in two diverse careers.

About the Author

Madonna Dries Christensen considered it the luck o? the Irish when she stumbled upon her McLaughlin and Jones cousins during genealogy research. She declined an offer to collaborate on a screenplay of their story and penned this authentic fictionalized account. Her amulets while writing were Gladys Jones?s 1926 sterling silver music award, and Hazel Jones?s Saint Jude medal.Twice nominated for the Pushcart Prize for fiction, her work has appeared in more than a hundred publications. She and her husband live in Sarasota, Florida, where an ancestral McLaughlin tombstone gathers moss in their garden.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keep up with the Joneses, June 24, 2005
This review is from: Swinging Sisters (Paperback)
This charming story is a smooth read all the way through; the blend of fact and fiction is seamless. Christensen used historical facts in a clever and entertaining way. The improvised dialogue, appropriate to the time and place, sometimes reads like the script for an old-time musical where Garland and Rooney say, "Hey, Gang, let's put on a show." And you know what-this book would make a fun and lively movie. A song title introduces each chapter, and with lots of music throughout the book, you might find yourself singing along, tapping your toes, and feeling good.
