Only the other day I was listening to Vido Musso play clarinet on a Billie Holiday recording from 1936. He was a talented and prolific jazzman. But on these recordings from the mid-1950's, he embraces a totally different persona. He fronts a small ensemble in sax led performances influenced by rock and roll and r and b. He snarls, he dances, and he makes a very big noise. Hearing this so many years later, the influence sounds less like Benny Goodman than it does Bill Haley and the Comets. Some listeners will be horrified by all this. I find it quaint and charming. Some of the instruments featured are electric bass and guitar, and electric organ. The sound engineering is monaural, yet clear and pleasing. There even are two cuts where the sounds of a screaming audience of kids has been superimposed on the performances. And just wait till you get a hold of the original cover art for the album Teen Age Dance Party. Straight out of the respectable fraternities in Animal House!
