Incredible music from an important, overlooked label!, September 23, 2011
This review is from: Swingtime Records Story (Audio CD)
Simply great, well-packaged compilation with excellent bonus booklet about Swingtime Records. Most of us should know the artists collected here--Lowell Fulson, Ray Charles, Percy Mayfield, Big Joe Turner, Jimmy Witherspoon, Charles Brown--but probably not the tunes. Most of these recordings are either rare or underplayed classics of the jump blues/early rock 'n' roll era featuring mostly piano tunes with an occasional guitar or even gospel number thrown in. Deserves repeated listening. Put it on your iPod or iPhone and set it to shuffle. Listen to Lloyd Glenn's "Chica Boo", Lowell Fulson's "Let Me Ride In Your Little Automobile" and Ray Charles' "You'll Never Miss The Water (Until The Well's Gone Dry)" to get a varied sampling. Highly recommended.

Forgotten Classics, July 9, 2007
This review is from: Swingtime Records Story (Audio CD)
This is great music, well presented, with surprising sound quality. If
you are a Ray Charles fan, or at all interested in the history of soul
or blues, this is essential. Considering the age, you might think that the music would sound dated. Nothing could be further from the truth. The songs here are as energetic and vibrant as they must have been over fifty years ago. I notice that the set appears to be currently out of print, a shame. If you can find a copy, do yourself a favor and enjoy some exceptional music you're unlikely to hear anywhere else.
