4.0 out of 5 stars Great machine with a few modifications, December 10, 2006

This review is from: Swisher LS10528H 28-Ton 10.5 HP Log Splitter (Lawn & Patio)
I have owned this model for about 9 months now and have split over 20 cords so far. It is easy to operate, easy to start with a quick cycle on the ram. I get about 2 hours of running time to a tank of gas. Plenty of power, it has split everything I've thrown at it including 48" rounds of fresh elm and oak.

Now for the problems, most splitters have a hitch arm seperate from the I-beam/Ram. This one is combined. The unit has a seperate support leg on the engine/resevoir base. It is stable enough but I think a seperate hitch/I-beam would create a wider stance making the unit rock slightly less. It is not a huge concern, more for the oil leaking out the cap, which I mention below. This may not be a concern if the machine is used in the horizontal position. I only use it in the upright position. A wider base plate on the I-beam would be beneficial if you use it in the upright position also.

I did bend the brackets that attach the splitting wedge to the I-beam. Customer Service promptly sent a replacement splitting wedge and brackets. I was pleased to see that the replacement wedge was twice as heavy as the original.

The only other improvement I would make would be baffles in the reservoir. It seems on the return stroke the oil has a tendency to splash through the vented cap if the unit is not perfectly level. Its worse if the unit is leaning slighty with the cap on the low side. Tilting the unit slighty with the cap on the high side helps with this problem.

I have not seen any other 10 hp engines on splitters until you get into the 30 ton or better range. Then the cost goes up significantly. I dont think I would use it for commercial application but for the homeowner thats splits a moderate to a heavy amount of wood, this is the one to use. All in all it is an excellent value for the money.
