An Invaluable Guide for the Bernese Oberland Traveler,
By A Customer
This review is from: Swiss - Bernese Oberland 2nd Edition A travel guide with specific trips to the mountains, lakes and villages (Paperback)
I bought the Alspach's book on the Bernese Oberland when it was first published in 1992. This book has been invaluable to my family on our many trips to that area. Since we are there for at least two weeks, we have had the chance to follow almost all of the suggested hikes and excursions and have loved every one of them. I recently purchased their 2nd Edition and they have done a great job of updating their gem of a travel guide, adding many new maps, photographs and hikes. The hike called the Eiger Trail is spectacular, a great addition. We did this hike last year and found it as rewarding as the Alspach's state. We are looking forward to the hike to Obersteinberg, as it suggests an overnight stay in a mountain hotel. I highly recommend the 2nd Edition if you are lucky enough to be traveling to the Swiss Bernese Oberland.

This review is from: Swiss Bernese Oberland : A Summer Guide With Specific Trips to the Mountains, Lakes and Villages (Paperback)
Last September I visited the Bernese Oberland area for 5 days. The Alspach's book guaranteed that I got the most out of my vacation. I was able to visit the top of the Jungfrau, hike the Faulhorn trail, and visit the waterfalls. I can't wait to go back and explore the other hikes and activities that Phil and Loretta suggested. If you plan on visiting the Bernese Oberland area, this book is essential. You will not be disappointed, it will guarantee a great time, regardless of the weather.

Especially Great for the First Time Visitor,

I've been to Switzerland on 4 trips for a total of about 6weeks, mainly in the Bernese Oberland. I have not yet found a better book for the first time visitor to this area. Even though I've been there several times I still find it worthwhile. There are no specifics on hotels or restaurants, just on sights. They choose 10 trips and 4 excursions, and I can think of other choices but not better choices; most are my favorites. The trips are from a half day to one day, depending on what variations you choose; the excursions require a full day. There are also some other suggestions and information on Swiss tourist offices and websites, which I would also recommend that you email and/or visit when you are in the area. Basic information includes food & drink, transportation, etc.

TAKE THIS GUIDE WITH YOU WHEN YOU VISIT THE BERNESE OBERLAND,

This review is from: Swiss Bernese Oberland : A Summer Guide With Specific Trips to the Mountains, Lakes and Villages (Paperback)
My husband and I, along with our two sons, toured the Bernese Oberland following this terrific guide. The Alspach's were quite right about children, of all ages, enjoying this region. Following their well-planned excurions gave us every opportunity to explore and enjoy this wonderful section of Switzerland. You will see the most beautiful sights following this detail-oriented guide; their step-by-step directions to each destination were very easy to follow and they thoroughly explained what we should look for along the way, the history of the area, and what you can expect when you arrive at the point of interest. The map provided for each excursion is a tremendous help and the beautiful photographs within the book invite you to continue on to another destination within this spectacular region. This guide is a very valuable tool and our well-worn book is ready to go with us when we visit the region again this August.

We were in Switzerland this summer and I highly recommend this guide for anyone who will be in the Bernese Oberland area in Switzerland. It is very well written and the maps are very helpful. Wengen, a small swiss village 45 minutes from Interlaken is very beautiful and we could have easily missed that had it not been for this book.

Exactly what I was looking for...,
This review is from: Swiss Bernese Oberland: A Travel Guide with Specific Trips to the Mountains, Lakes and Villages, Third Edition (Paperback)
Very detailed information with lots of pictures, but in a compact form. If you are spending any time in the Bernese Oberland area of Switzerland, this book will greatly simplify your experience and help you decide what to do when you get there. Written by authors who have been visiting the area for 30 years! Highly recommended.

Loved the book!! it is easy to use especially for first time visitors who are not familiar with all of the different rail systems in the SBO. I stayed in Wengen for 4 days and used the book often to decide which trip to conduct and also how to easily find and navigate the cable cars, gondolas and hiking paths. The book was especially helpful since the weather was a bit overcast in the higher altitudes and we chose to go down into Interlakin for a day trip, which the book covers as well. Bravo to the authors and thank you for making my Swiss Bernese Oberland visit one of the best vacations I have had in a long time.

not what I expected,
This review is from: Swiss Bernese Oberland: A Travel Guide with Specific Trips to the Mountains, Lakes and Villages, Third Edition (Paperback)
This book is not what I expected, but that could be my fault. It is quite thin, and has trip suggestions in trains, boats etc. I didn't want to rate it, because I didn't read all of it, only took a glance to verify that I will have no use in it, since I was hiking in swiss. So the 3 stars are from walker point of view. |
