My seven-year-old daughter loves to read and I was eager to introduce her to the classics in English literature. I knew the original versions might be too daunting for her due to the high level vocabulary and have been looking around for well-written adaptations that retain the essence of the original.

The language in this adaptation is pitched just right, neither too easy nor too advanced for an independent young reader. The story has enough drama and action to keep a young reader engaged.

There are many other classics in the Stepping Stones Classics chapter book series, and I highly recommend them for independent young readers who'd like to read the classics. There are also two DVDs which I think would be lovely complements to this book:
Swiss Family Robinson (Vault Disney Collection)
The Adventures of Swiss Family Robinson - The Complete Series

We read this book to our 8 year old son each night before bed and it was terribly boring. We were looking for books so that he could read along to himself and that would introduce him to some classics. We enjoyed Tom Sawyer, Les Miserables, and Robin Hood from this series much more. This one was just too boring.

Purchased for a child who is a late bloomer. He's very excited to have interesting books he CAN read.

Great classic story for early readers, however do not expect these books to last. They are cheaply made, but at the same time the price is great.

I used this book with an intermediate-level college ESL class. The students seemed to enjoy it and learned a lot of new vocabulary from it. The book is old-fashioned in its language and outlook, presenting the Robinsons as handily conquering every problem with hard work, good spirits, and ingenuity. A surprising number of animals were killed. It was fun to watch the Disney movie after we finished the book and compare and contrast the two.

We used this for a bedtime read with our four year old, and he enjoyed the adventurous story simply told.

I chose this rating because there were some good parts, but there were sorta sad parts to, like-(attention! Spoiler(s) ahead, but just a tiny one) when the giant serpent eats the donkey, Grizzle, and the dad kills a turtle. Anyway, I recommend this book to people who like adventures.
