I purchased this to meet a price-point for free shipping.
The tool is very small. Slightly smaller than 3x2 (six) of the keys on my very generic keyboard.
The mechanism that locks the tool in place onto a ring or such (mine used to share a ring with a LED flashlight) is clever and can never come undone as long as the handles are holding it closed.
The markers on the sides are not labeled, so if you forget the unit it's of little use. They're 1/8th of an inch but could be mistaken for centimeters or something else. A stamp on the side of the handle would've been nice.
The pliers have a poor texture for holding onto many things, but the handles provide good leverage to pinch down on smaller objects, such as "...to extract a broken key from a lock." per NomDePlume.
The flat-sided driver has a tip that is too narrow and "widens" so quickly that it hasn't fit anything "juuuust right" that I've run into yet.
The Phillips-head driver is no better. The tip is very rounded, very, I suppose so it doesn't stab you in the leg in your pocket. The teeth increase in thickness too quickly for my liking.
I recommend unfolding the pliers and fold in whichever handle you're not using as the driver. It's almost frustrating when the handles turn out-of-straight when you try to loosen a screw. A notch and nipple might've helped this.
The shear is nice. I found it useful for trimming plastic pull-ties and the handles provide good leverage.Read more ›
Incidentally, I bought a Swisstech "utili-key" last year. It was flimsy, and broke off the keyring. I won't buy that again. This piece is very solid, and will not come off the keyring as long as the screwdriver arms are folded up.
I'd like it to have a little blade, but nothing more. I'm not interested in the "19-in-1" model -- too busy, too many small parts to fiddle with and possibly break. The good thing about no blade, however, is that it won't get confiscated at airport security.
This thing's great. I'll buy more for stocking stuffers next Christmas!
I purchased this one to replace the same one that was on my key chain for over 2 years--the rivet in one handle was getting loose (because of the large amount of use it had), and it was coming apart on its own and falling off my key chain. For 8 bucks and 30 months of service, I can't complain.
The pliers are more nippers, but they are able to grab SMALL things very well. The hinge pins are going to be a limiting factor to how much force you can apply, but the handles aren't long enough for you to really put THAT much force on it. The straight driver doesn't really fit anything well, but a moment with a file fixed that. Likewise, the phillips driver tries to fit a #1 and a #2 screw, but fails on both, so again filing down the tip is needed.
But really, for most people, that's a step that shouldn't be needed. For some professional tools, sure, customizing them to your specific task is not only acceptable but expected. For <$8 keychain widget.... not so much.
