This is a virtually identical review I wrote for the model SA1923, which I now use.

I needed to replace my old laptop backpack and noticed many colleagues using the SwissGear line. The difficulty in ordering one of these on-line is that there are a number of variations and the differences are subtle. From everything I could learn an all websites, including Amazon, there were 2 models I was interested in. the SA1900 (this one) and the SA1923. The photos are misleading. They are not necessarily unique to those specific models. I had to order both packs and compare in-hand and send the one back that I didn't fit my needs.

The only difference between these 2 models, besides the color, is this one has a compartment for an iPad opposite the laptop compartment in the section that opens up to lie flat on the airport's scanning conveyor. Thus, your laptop will be in one half and your iPad in the other as it goes through the scanner. The SA1923 has a full width pocket for a slim folder or notebook in the iPad's location. All other compartments and sections of the pack are identical. I loved the color red color of this one, which is unique, but I don't use an iPad and I wanted the pocket there for travel papers (itinerary, boarding passes, receipts, etc.) Also, keep in mind access to the laptop compartment is on one side only (right side while wearing the pack). The zipper goes from the top of the pack down the side.

The pack is roomy and can old a lot. Probably more than I would really want to carry. My only complaint with both packs is I wish it had just a couple of other small zippered sections inside for small miscellaneous items often needed on business trips (e.g. medications, snacks, sunglasses or reading glasses, etc.).

There are other models in this line that are smaller and more simple. If the features each offer is important, just don't rely on the pictures if they seem to be the same as other models.

I bought this backpack for a roadtrip with some friends. Since it's a roadtrip I couldn't take a suitcase with me so I decided to buy a traveling backpack instead. I knew that SwissGear is a good brand for backpacks and after looking through Amazon I decided to buy this one.
When I received this backpack I knew that this is a high quality product after unpacking it. The material is very durable and the zippers are huge and strong. I was amazed by how much stuff this backpack can pack! I fitted in about 12 shirts and underwear, 1 sweater, 1 jacket, 1 pair of pants, 5 pairs of socks, 1 laptop, and some small stuff such as shaver, toothbrush, chargers, camera, etc. It is just like a small suitcase!
Right now I'm also using this for my college, I usually need to carry a lot of books and a laptop. The back of the backpack has a thick "cushion" and my shoulders and back don't feel sore at all.
    I warmly recommend this backpack!

We purchased this backpack for our new 17" HP laptop. The website was very good at helping us pick a backpack this laptop would actually fit itside. It also has the special pocket that, hopefully, will make getting through airport security checks easier (don't know yet - I fly with it for the first time tomorrow). Very heavy duty contruction and well made zippers and pockets. My only complaint is that it is so big, my husband can load so much stuff in it that it winds up being pretty heavy. No slinging it over one shoulder for long - you need to use both straps for the load! EDIT - made it through the airline security perfectly - did not have to remove the computer, just opened the special zippered compartment! They did find my water bottle though - I had forgotten it in that deep side pocket! I met someone else in line with this same backpack. He had been using it for 2 years and it still looked great.

I searched online and in stores for 2 months prior to purchasing this back pack. Now that I've had it for three months I am convinced I made the correct choice. It has plenty of pockets and and all of them are an appropriate size and depth. Although I don't travel a ton, I needed a bag that didn't require me to take out my laptop at the airport. One of the best features of this bag is the Scan Smart feature. (keep in mind, although it hasn't happened to me yet, the TSA can still require you to take out your laptop any time they feel like it.)

One last note: Unless you are a male or a person the size of an average male, I would not recommend this bag if you plan on using both straps (versus just slinging one of them over one shoulder.) The straps are just a little bit too far apart for my taste but since I don't walk that far with it at any one time it doesn't bother me too much. But if you are going to have it on for a long time and plan on using both straps, you will need to cinch up the straps as far as they go so that it fits a little more snugly, otherwise the straps slip off your shoulders just a little bit and you find yourself squeezing them back together etc.

Have been using this backpack for a month now. Like being able to go through the "TSA Gauntlet" without taking the laptop out of the backpack; just unzip the backpack and lay it on the conveyor belt opened up. On the other side zip it back up and you're on your way.

Plenty of storage compartments for all of the stuff I take with me when I travel. I travel every week and this one backpack has replaced two other travel bags. Down to one carry-on.
