5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Much Perfect
I own two of these, for a Melitta Clarity and Presto Scandinavian Design coffee makers. The difference in taste between these and paper filters is unimaginable. It's not the same as French pressed coffee: not as thick mouthfeel, brighter. The SwissGold filter is fine enough that there is very little sediment, a problem cheaper (Krups) knock-offs suffer badly from...

2.0 out of 5 stars Didn't hold up
Less than six months after buying this one, it's got tears in the filter. It doesn't go in the dishwasher and there's no heavy usage or harsh washing (mostly just rinsing). I thought by spending a little more, I'd get better quality but it's just not holding up to 3x per week use. I'm going back to the Cuisinart one I had before.

The filter has an indented rim to let you pick it up, rather than a handle. This lets it fit into more machines, at the cost of making it less convenient to remove while hot from machines that don't have a detachable filter holder (both of mine do, so it's kind of moot for me).

One thing the write-up doesn't mention is that there is an extension ring hiding in the box under the little cardboard bit the filters sits in. I have never needed it, but I imagine there are coffee machines where it would help.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, but the Online Price is Too High!, November 30, 2008
By

This review is from: SwissGold KF 4 Universal Gold Plated Coffee Filter
SPECIAL NOTE: At the time of my review, the onlice price was $34.99

I've used these filters for years. Completely eliminates that "paper" taste from regular paper filters. However, even these are only relatively permanent filters - they will clog up over time and you must replace them. I still buy and recommend them, but the online price shown here is exorbitant! I can buy this same item - same manufacturer and model - retail at many coffee stores here in San Francisco for $20.95. I order a lot of things online, but I go for price AND convenience. Caveat emptor!

5.0 out of 5 stars So far, so good. Works with Technivorm Moccamasters, September 27, 2011

I don't have much new information to add, except that the filter does work perfectly with the Technivorm Moccamaster, in case anybody was wondering (like I was).

This filter is pricey, but it is worth every penny. It brews a nice pot of coffee, and you don't have to waste paper filters. The material is very durable, and we've seen no tears.

I won't write the typical pro & con for this product. That's because there are no cons. Forget other brands or types of non-paper filters. This is the cream of the crop.

"Surely ye jest-$30.00 for a coffee filter?" you ask?! Well, yes, with so many garbage consumer products out there, I am proud to recommend this one. By using this product, you eliminate the taste and waste from paper filters. You also get a much better brew as the gold foil is "neutral" as far as taste goes. In other words, there is no taste transfer from this product to your coffee.

In addition, other permanent filters have a coarse weave to the filter material, often resulting in mud coffee-that thick stuff in the last swallow or two of your morning brew. YEECH!!

I have a previous version of the same product, and mine is over three years old and just as good as the day I bought it. It has been through the dishwasher numerous times and still good as-well-GOLD! (sorry for the pun)

So if you grind your own beans and want to eliminate the paper taste from your java, this is the item to buy. But don't throw away your paper filters. If, on occasion like me, you want absolutely NO COFFEE SEDIMENT in your java, then use a paper filter. WARNING: Don't use a paper filter and the gold filter at the same time. Use one or the other or you will find yourself cleaning up a kitchen counter/floor of hot liquid!

My wife and I use this in conjunction with our Technivorm coffee maker. It makes a truly remarkable cup of coffee. No comparison to other products. It does seem to wear though. Not sure why. Does anyone else have this problem with their Technivorm?

5.0 out of 5 stars a better coffee filter, April 28, 2011

This filter is much better than the ones provided by Krups or other manufacturers. The coffee tastes better, the filter cleans easier. If you drink a lot of coffee, it is worth the investment.

This works well and I used it with a porcelain filter holder. Then I found a better way with the vacuum brewer. It has only glass components and has less sludge that the gold filter. The small vac brewers are about $35. I have tried every method and aside from my espresso maker, the vacuum brewer does the best job.

I own a Starbucks' programmable coffee machine and needed to replace my metal filter. This filter is sturdy, the mesh is thin enough that you can grind the coffee so that the grounds are fine, and I've been extremely satisfied with my coffee since I purchased it.
