This is an excellent solution if you like a small-ish (8-10 oz or less) and convenient cup of coffee in the morning. My experience is that no automatic drip maker is really designed to make a good single cup, and while I use a french press on the weekends, cleaning the screen assembly is too much hassle for a weekday morning, as is having to mind the infusion time. So the swissgold one-cup is an excellent compromise. There's no brew time to pay attention to, it's very easy to rinse everything clean under the tap, and you don't have to buy or throw away paper filters!
My only complaint (hence the 4 stars rather than 5) is that the infusion time seems very short -- the cup is usually done brewing in about a minute or less -- and the coffee does lack body as a result. I wonder if the filter might have been designed to slow down brewing a bit more. In any case, I just use a fairly fine grind, like one of the other reviewers here said, and end up with very decent coffee with a minimum of hassle.

This is a good single cup coffee maker. The Melitta 64007B Single Cup Coffee Filter Cone ( BLACK ) paired withMedelco #2 Cone Permanent Coffee Filter is easier to use. One must keep lifting this brewer to see how much coffee is in the cup. Do not have to keep lifting the Melitta to see in the cup. Does produce a good brew and does not require the purchase of a separate reusable filter as the Melitta does. Both are great items for RVing. I think it is just a matter of preference of the user.
UPDATE After using this single cup coffeemaker and the Melitta for an extended period. I prefer this setup as it is much easier to clean than the Melitta with the permanent filter.

I'm a bit of a skinflint so wasn't all too keen about forking out the money for this but it is worth every cent. I thought there's no point continuing to buy quality coffee if paper filters in my existing devices are going to absorb all the oils and fats that give the coffee its flavour. This little device on the other hand gives you the convenience of a drip with the taste of a French Press, you'll be amazed at the difference if you're used to brew methods using paper filters. Can't go wrong with this, I certainly won't be using anything else from now on.

Perfect for the mobile solo coffee drinker,

I've used this product for 15 - 20 years (since my wife is not a coffee drinker) and I love it. It is easy to use, to clean and tastes great (I tend to make it strong, with a finer grind than they recommend). Now that I am going on assignment overseas, I've purchased two more: one to take with me and one for the office. That's how much I like it! It also can be taken on camping trips. I put the filter in a ziplock bag, and then put this inside a partially filled coffee can.

This filter is very easy to clean and therefore easy to use and makes an excellent cup of coffee. To start, I put in ground coffee and then the cup shaped insert with holes that comes with this filter which compacts down the coffee. Then I add hot water and keep adding some more (for a larger cup). The water flows down pretty quick in the beginning but after the grounds get a bit saturated it flows down slower. I get a pretty dark and satisfying cup of coffee with this filter, better then the old electric coffee maker. The provided lid goes on top and keeps the water hot while the coffee is brewing. It takes 2-4 minutes to brew an 8 oz cup from a relatively fine grind depending on how much coffee you use. Using too much coffee can make the water overflow, as I learned!
If you use a coffee press this method may not please you, as it will not extract the oils from the coffee like a press. The resulting brew is not as potent as a coffee press brew, I prefer that as the coffee press can result in a bitter brew if the coffee is ground too fine or it brews for more than 4 minutes. I do love the convenience of being able to use this filter at work. It's easy enough to brew coffee and then to clean all you need to do is to dump the grounds and give it a quick rinse. I don't wash it with soap each time, only every few days as the coffee does tend to make it a bit oily. If you like stronger coffee you can grind the beans a bit finer than a coffee press grind. That will make it compact down more and the resulting brew will be stronger but can overflow if you add too much water. I also used Melitta U S A Inc 640007 Perfect Brew Filter Cone which makes a slightly lighter cup of coffee as some of the oils get absorbed by the paper filter even if you use an unbleached filter. With Melitta clean up is even easier as you just throw out the filter with grounds. I use it at home quite often as I just brew a single cup, and it's fast and convenient. However it is not as compact as the Swissgold and uses filters so for travel or work I use Swissgold.

Swissgold KF 300 One-Cup Coffee Filter. This permanent coffee filter is awesome. Just remember to read the instructions and put the coffee in the lower compartment not the top as I did at first. If you do this it will take forever to filter.
It's compact and is great to travel with. Use the left over grinds in your compost.

I have used 2 of these for 20 years: one at work and one at home. I originally bought mine in Scotland! I recently damaged the filter on one and came looking to see if they were still available and was so pleased to find them here. I use very fine grind and it slows the drip rate so that I end up with a very strong cup of coffee - just the way I like it. These filters are great.

I love my new one-cup coffee filter. It makes good strong coffee (I grind the beans a little finer than usual) and controls the flow of water onto the grounds so you don't have to sit there adding hot water little by little. Plus I don't have to buy (or throw away) filters anymore. Very highly recommended!

I've owned this type coffee filter for over 25 years and have used it every single day. It makes a great cup of coffee, the quality of a cup of coffee depends mightily on the the quality of coffee you use. Alas, my 25 year+ red filter has a crack in it and I must replace it.

This coffee gold coffee filter is a good thing. I have use it almost every day for many years when I want to make a single cup as my honey is not a coffee drinker. All one needs is hot water, mug, coffee
and you are good to go. Have taken this handy gadget on many vacations such as camping,RVing, tea drinking friend's home and even took it to China and used it in the hotel. I use a filter paper when I want easy clean up. The reason I purchased a new one was I mistakingly cleaned the gold filter in bleach water and the gold filter decindegrated in areas and made a few holes in the gold filter. Still used it for more than a year, though. Actually I have not even opened the new one, now that I think of it. The cost has increase by a few dollars since my last purchase more than 5 years ago. |
