This review is from: Swissmar Borner V-Slicer Pro Mandoline V-4000, 7-Piece Set (Kitchen)
I received this as a Christmas gift --one of the best I've ever enjoyed! It is easier, faster and less hassle than my food processor. The first day I got it I used it to slice potatoes for scalloped potatoes and oh my gosh how easy. I find I grab it and go to much more than my electric gadgets (and I admit, I love gadgets...) It's a necessity for what I need lots of--onions (is there a good recipe that does not include onions???) peppers, tomatoes, apples, fennel, etc....it's a wonder on hard fruits and veggies. The clean up is quick, the hand-guard/pusher is easy and actually works, (I've even used this thing with celery!) and the attachments fit and store very well in the rack that's included. (And very safely)My only complaint is that the plastic seems to stain with carrot or tomato. In the big scheme of things....no biggie. I love this thing!

I have been using the regular V-Slicer mandolin for several years! It's a definite must-have in the kitchen but be careful...it is super sharp and will slice your finger through the bone if you use it without the guard and don't pay 100% attention to what you are doing!!! No kidding! By far the cheapest and most practical alternative to a professional stainless-steel mandoline. I am getting this professional set as a back-up. This is the best value on the market and I have tried using a few others only to come back to this one. In fact, I travel with it sometimes and slice apples etc in my hotel/billetting room. The V-Slicer very quickly, attractively and uniformly slices and juliennes vegetables and fruits. I shred cabbages, plantains, beets, celery, potatoes, tomatoes, onions and many more.

Fantastic tool -- and better than V-Slicer Plus,

I just tried out my new V-Slicer Pro - my very first time using a mandoline - and it's impressive. I can't believe I've spent my entire adult life slicing and shredding everything with just a knife! This thing is fast and precise and when you use the safety holder, it seems very safe. Just to be sure, I purchased and used a Victorinox cut resistant glove (Victorinox Cutlery UltraShield Cut Resistant Glove, Medium), which is excellent and which I also highly recommend. I linked to the medium size but I got the glove in XS - it was the only cut-resistant glove I could find that runs that small. The mandoline is also very easy to care for -- just lock the blade into the safety setting, run under hot water, and set out to dry. It's lightweight and compact, and can be tucked easily into most kitchen drawers. This model is an upgrade over the Plus, with a lockable safety setting for the blade, greater convenience in switching cut types, and greater cutting options in general, including more thicknesses. I'm not sure why folks are still getting the Plus, as the current price difference (around $10) seems marginal relative to the benefits of the Pro. Also, Amazon is running this Pro model, but not the Plus model, in its 4-for-3 promotion (as of the time of this review anyway), so if you plan on purchasing other similarly priced items, this actually comes out comparably priced to the Plus. BTW, for those of you who prefer to research your products before buying, the Swissmar mandoline (Pro or Plus) is a top-rated model pretty consistently across sources, including some serious cooking/foodie web sites. It is also one of the wider handheld mandolines - the other top rated ones are measurably narrower, and therefore might not accommodate larger fruits and veggies (onions, tomatoes, etc.) without first cutting into smaller pieces. If I had to nitpick, I could find a few things that are less than perfect. The mandoline and all the parts are made of pretty flimsy white plastic, and looks pretty cheap (it's no stainless steel wonder). Also, you can't switch out the main base blade, and I don't think there's an easy way to sharpen it. Finally, there are only several set thicknesses for each type of cut, unlike some other (but typically more pricey) models with continuous settings. But I view this as a great daily tool and my first introduction to mandolines, so these things aren't a deal-breaker for me. I can always upgrade later. I am very happy with this purchase and am delighted it's eased me into the wonderful world of mandolines! Highly recommended.

Overall good, hand guard design is a little problematic,
This review is from: Swissmar Borner V-Slicer Pro Mandoline V-4000, 7-Piece Set (Kitchen)
It's overall very good. The unit is stable and doesn't skid while slicing. It comes with a variety of blades that satisfy all of my cutting needs. My only complaint is that it is very difficult to julienne small items such as carrots due to the hand guard, which doesn't hold produce of this size very well at all.

I did quite a bit of research on various mandolins, as I have been wanting one for quite some time. I am an avid "at home cook" and was DYING for something to simplify prep time in the kitchen. After reading a few reviews, I decided on the Boerner V Slicer Pro. The videos/infomercials are "gimmicky" but I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT...no question. I would recommend this product to my friends and family...heck! Even strangers! The one drawback I found was with carrots...unfortunately carrots were the first thing I used the V Slicer for, and similar to a prior review, it stained the plastic. I am hoping eventually it will fade over time as I have scrubbed it and scrubbed it. I hope that the acidity from various fruits and veggies will break down the staining. Other than that, I love it and think it is actually fun to use. I made fish tacos and shredded the cabbage EFFORTLESSLY, julienned carrots for a salad with no problem, and have experimented with various slicing methods. I definitely think I made a good choice, and am very happy with my purchase.

I have been using this for about 20 years. It appears like new--just a quick rinse and you're done. This is one of maybe 3 different styles of slicers that one must have to cover all your slicing needs. The blades stay sharp forever and the way it stores away with the sharp edges out of the way is innovative and safe. I can cut a huge head of cabbage into a mound of thin-sliced slaw in no time. The way it does paper-thin onion slices is great, or chop a whole bunch to store in the fridge for daily use. I make potato chips as well...this is the machine to slice up a bunch with! The best!!

Slices beautifully with a minimum amount of work. I'm really glad I bought a mandoline with a safety guard-- those blades are sharp, and I like my fingers.I haven't tried slicing carrots or anything narrow like that yet, so can't weigh in on whether or not the guard makes slicing them difficult. It's beautiful for other stuff, though. Makes onions a cinch. For me, just making slicing onions such a breeze is worth the 50$. (I cut a lot of onions.) Good stuff, if you've got the cash.

Excellent product...just as advertised. Quickly handles all the salad preparation, just as fast if not faster than a food processor. I used to buy pre shredded cabbage, carrots, broccoli, etc, for cole slaw. Using the Borner will pay for itself. I was amazed at how much cheaper it is to buy the whole vegetables. Be sure to consider the bowl accessory. It securely attaches to the v-slicer and holds everything. A lot easier than trying to pick up the sliced vegetables from the cutting board

Exactly what I was looking for,
This review is from: Swissmar Borner V-Slicer Pro Mandoline V-4000, 7-Piece Set (Kitchen)
After reading all the mostly positive reviews on the Borner V-Slicer, I decided to purchase the pro model since it was only $10 more than the standard model. I had never used a mandoline slicer before. This cuts so effortlessly that you can't even feel any drag from the food. Dicing took only took about 5 seconds to master. I also purchased the optional oval bowl that the slicer can mount to and it has turned out to be very handy.

I searched reviews on mandolines for over a week before I decided on which to purchase. The Swissmar Borner Plus got the best overall ratings so I decided to go one step above and get the Pro instead. I always go the less expensive route and then wish later I'd gotten the better one. However, I feel for sure the Plus is an excellent product if it works as well as the Pro. I love it.... It's quick cleaning and easy to use. A great time saver. The blades are very sharp and cut with ease. I really don't use the handle that holds the vegetables because yes it does leave alot to waste. If you just take time and pay attention to what you're doing you can cut your foods by just holding on to the vegetables itself. You must be careful and treat it like you would any other sharp knife product. The blades are so sharp you don't have to use alot of pressure. I'm very glad I purchased this product and hope it last for a long time. I would definitely buy it all over again.S.Carter |
