Book Description

8 and up3 and up

A secret-agent spin on the technology running through a house.

Casey, who loves a good spy story, wonders about the mysterious, unseen workings of a home. How does tap water get to the top of an apartment building? Where does his garbage go? And how does his friend's voice come out of the telephone?

So begins Casey's dogged investigation into the hidden (and not-so-hidden) workings of the home. Switched On, Flushed Down, Tossed Out follows Casey through sixteen case files investigating such processes as:

  • Water sources, hot and cold, and how it travels to your taps
  • Sewage treatment and waste water disposal
  • Garbage disposal and recycling
  • Power generation and how electricity travels
  • Telephone, television, and radio transmissions
  • Heating and air conditioning.

Each case file offers clear explanations, helpful diagrams, and interesting facts about these and other familiar elements in both houses and apartments. Meanwhile, fascinating sidebars offer surprising examples of household workings throughout history and around the world. A final section offers a glimpse of how our homes may function in the future.

Casey soon discovers the only thing more interesting than a mystery is discovering the facts. So, too, will readers be intrigued by Trudee Romanek's funny and informative look into the not-so-secret world behind the walls. Meanwhile, Stephen MacEachern's vibrant cartoon illustrations and clear diagrams will keep even the most hardboiled detective laughing and well informed.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5–A curious kid investigates the mysteries of his house, which include plumbing, electricity, and other workings of a typical home. Cartoon illustrations introduce each section or case file. In them, the boy puts forth some wild theories about what he observes involving secret agents and spies. Though they add a light tone, few are truly funny, and the premise wears thin pretty quickly. The factual information that follows, though, is presented well. The language is conversational, but clear, providing general information without attempting to be too detailed. One section leads logically to another: a simple description of water pipes is followed by an explanation of dripping faucets, then by the more specific question of how water reaches upper floors. Most topics feature a simple diagram to help clarify the concepts. However, not all of the subject matter lends itself to a single-page explanation. Television and telephones are particularly hard to grasp through this approach, but the facts that are included are still easy enough to follow. Cartoon drawings, historical tidbits, and assorted facts are interspersed without cluttering the pages. The art is eye-catching, even when the humor is strained, and there is plenty of useful information here that should intrigue and educate kids about everyday household mechanics.–Steven Engelfried, Beaverton City Library, OR

From Booklist

Gr. 3-5. How does my voice travel into my phone and out someone else's? How does a thermostat work? And "where does all the guck go when I flush the toilet? How does it get out, and just where does it go?" A kid launches Operation Discovery to solve the mysterious goings-on at home; he is sure that secret agents are analyzing the garbage and spying on the pipes and wires. His comic, paranoid theories get a bit repetitive, but there's plenty of fun in the amazing facts and clear explanations about electricity, water, heat, and how ordinary household things work. The text is lively and colloquial, and the numerous headers are often playful puns. The double-page spreads, perfect for browsing, burst with bright cartoon images of the boy at home and bits of text that ask questions and supply the answers. The down-to-earth information will grab kids, as will the wonder of how things work. Hazel Rochman

4.0 out of 5 stars Some good info, but a little disapointing, October 17, 2011

I thought this book would 'take you through' the workings of a house in a more engaging way. It has a short 'detective' setup for each section then goes on to explain the answer in long text form. This is fine for an interested 10 year old but not so engaging for a kid to just pick up and read. I thought it would do a better job of pulling out clues pertinent to the mystery at hand but it just explains the system.

It does explain things in terms a child can understand but I thought it would be a little more engaging.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for your budding scientist, September 11, 2009
I got this for my niece who loves science and loves to know how things work. It was a huge hit. The book covers water, waste (including "poop processing"), power, media, and heat. The dialogue is simple and easy for a child to understand and the book addresses the questions most kids ask at one time or another!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great "Boy" book, January 13, 2009

I bought this book for my nephew for Christmas. When he first opened it, he had the "oh great, a book for Christmas" look on his face. But, as soon as he flipped open the cover, he became entralled in the diagrams of all the inner workings of the house -- plumbing, electricity, etc. I knew he was interested in how things work, so I was happy that this book satisfied his curiosity. We actually had to make him put it away to open the rest of his presents :)
