I thought this book would 'take you through' the workings of a house in a more engaging way. It has a short 'detective' setup for each section then goes on to explain the answer in long text form. This is fine for an interested 10 year old but not so engaging for a kid to just pick up and read. I thought it would do a better job of pulling out clues pertinent to the mystery at hand but it just explains the system.

It does explain things in terms a child can understand but I thought it would be a little more engaging.

I got this for my niece who loves science and loves to know how things work. It was a huge hit. The book covers water, waste (including "poop processing"), power, media, and heat. The dialogue is simple and easy for a child to understand and the book addresses the questions most kids ask at one time or another!

I bought this book for my nephew for Christmas. When he first opened it, he had the "oh great, a book for Christmas" look on his face. But, as soon as he flipped open the cover, he became entralled in the diagrams of all the inner workings of the house -- plumbing, electricity, etc. I knew he was interested in how things work, so I was happy that this book satisfied his curiosity. We actually had to make him put it away to open the rest of his presents :)
