4.0 out of 5 stars Very Nice December 10, 2007
Color:Natural|Verified Purchase
I own a photography studio and bought 4 different versions of these types of stands to display our wedding photography albums. Of the 4 I got and played with, this was the best. Here's why:

1. Sturdy construction - This is a solid piece. I feel like it will last many years, even with customers constantly picking up and putting albums back down on it.

2. Nice looking - It is very basic, but they did a nice job with the stain and construction. It looks like the same quality you would get with furniture, not some homemade thing that has blotchy stain or all the pieces aren't cut just right. It looks professionally made.

3. Smooth turning - The swivel mechanism is underneath and it rotates 360 degrees, they don't show it to you in the photos. However, it is very smooth in turning and, again, feels sturdy and well made.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because of point number 3 above. It is so smooth and easy to turn, I can see where it might become a little aggravating that the slightest bump will move it to a position you don't want. If they were to add a position lock to it, then it would be perfect.

Bottom line: Good looker and solid construction. Only one minor flaw, in my opinion.

3.0 out of 5 stars Levenger is more expensive, but much better April 15, 2011
Color:Dark Cherry|Verified Purchase
Some wrote below "better than I expected." This is not better than I expected.

The wood is stained well, but is not a heavy hardwood. I have the dark cherry one, and own cherry furniture and some cherry-stained non-cherry furniture. This stand is not even close to cherry in looks. If you hope that it matches any cherry furniture you might own--like a cherry desk--it will look cheap in comparison.

Although it does hold my Oxford English dictionary, and I like the swivel (as long as it's on a flat desk, otherwise it will swivel around to it's lowest gravity position on its own, every time, as others have written), I agree with others: the tab at the bottom should be slightly wider. As it is, it's very thin and barely holds a large book like the Oxford. It stands out from the flat surface only by 1/4 inch or so--should be more generous to give a better purchase for the book and would still not interfere with page turns.

I own a Levenger "desk", an Ergodesk or Ergo Desk, you can google it, and it's much more expensive at $140 or so, but it really is an heirloom. Solid wood, heavy, adjustable tilt, back extra book holder (hard to describe, you have to see it), and it's a thing of true beauty. If someone is not cash limited and simply wants the best, Levenger's book stand is it.

I would say this stand is passable, I will use it, it does hood my dictionary (barely) and I have a flat desk so it tends not to over swivel too much. I would not buy another one, though.

I will compliment the shipping of the product. Jumbo, well-protected box and fast shipping.

Have a wonderful day

3.0 out of 5 stars Solid Book Stand - Sensitive Swivel April 2, 2009
Color:Black
The book stand is solid and well built. My only complaint is the swivel device which allows the stand to swing is way to sensentive - therefore unless the shelf or other area you place the stand is exactly level the stand will not allow the book to faces you - it will shift left or right on its own and that can be very annoying.

4.0 out of 5 stars quality merchandise January 7, 2008

The book stand is a good size to hold a 'tabletop book' that you want to display - we are using it in a new bookcase/cabinet combo. It swivels very easily and is quite solid.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great item January 22, 2009
The book stand is very sturdy, has a solid feel to it (real wood, not some cheap laminate), and the ball-bearings on it are well-equipped for the job: I never suffered from issues of "too much" rotation: it always moved smoothly when I wanted it to, and otherwise stayed still.

The size is just right: it fits all of my textbooks (which are huge), and holds them up at just the right height and angle. My friend, cramming for his MCATs, "appropriated" my book stand after studying with it for an evening at my house. I'm now buying another to replace it: I never even considered trying a different book stand, despite the fact that it's significantly more expensive than most of the bookstands offered on amazon.

It's a fantastic item. You can check my review history; I'm not one to give rave reviews. This is one of the few occasions where it is entirely merited.

5.0 out of 5 stars NOT EXACTLY A REGENCY HEIRLOOM, BUT... February 12, 2014
By melono
Color:Mahogany|Verified Purchase
Admittedly, I have had the revolving "mahogany" book stand for but a short while. Yet, in that time, I have come to realize that the published on-line reviews of its detractors, for the most part, may have been unfair. For instance, the remark made about its "cheap" construction is a bit hard to take. Granted, the product is not exactly fashioned of the FINEST pure hand-sanded native forest-cultivated mahogany wood. Neither has there been layer upon layer of the most expensive stains and lacquers available applied to this product, followed by thousands of strokes of hand rubbing to produce a high sheen. While the product's tilt and swivel mechanisms can surely accommodate some pretty hefty tomes without untoward results, not unlike any other product, this book stand too surely has its limits. While it may accommodate my Oxford Universal Dictionary, I certainly would not inflict upon this bookstand the pronounced rigors of bearing, say, a facsimile version of the recently published Codex Sinaiticus (a massive volume whose heft I am sure caused a raised eyebrow or two among the postmen obliged to deliver them!). Overall, I am well pleased with this product and would even envision reordering it in the near future, as an adjunct to my ongoing outfitting of a basement "study cell" that I aM currently preparing for long-term use.

This could have been a junior high shop project. Very simply made. Nicely finished, but way too red. When I requested to return for a replacement the seller never responded.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's OK
For the price paid, this product was disappointing. I could have bought the materials and made it for far less! It feels like pressboard, and not very solid. Read more
