Book Description

You swing a staff until you're ready to swing a sword. Then you go on all kinds of adventures - fighting monsters, casting spells and saving damsels in distress. At least that's how it's supposed to work, but I didn't believe a word of it.

BOOK ONE OF THE EPIC FANTASY SERIES RETURN OF THE DRAGONS

Locked in his room in the castle, young Anders yearns for adventure. Until the day he opens a magic portal and a girl bursts into his locked room with a chemical warlock hot on her trail.

And adventure finds him -- an adventure full of danger, full of blood, fire, demons and evil. To face it, he'll need the sword given him by his blademaster, need the ancient words his grandfather gave him on his deathbed. Need the song that runs in his own blood, in his veins.

A sword will be reforged, magic words discovered, battles fought, friends made and lost, secrets revealed. And blood will be spilled. But will blade, word and blood be enough?

1.0 out of 5 stars The Writing Gets in the Way of the Story January 7, 2013
By Emily
Format:Kindle Edition
This story has a lot of potential, but as it is now it's too poorly written to warrant a read. The premises are interesting, but the language and writing with which they are executed is distracting.

As another reviewer said, there are glaring inconsistencies throughout the book, particularly as they pertain to the father of one of the main characters, who is originally said to have been killed when the character was nine, but is then referenced as having been alive when she was 10 and being alive in the current time frame of the novel when she is older. It looked like the author was planning on using her uncle as a father-figure substitute but then forgot and went back to the father. The uncle and the father even have the same name.

In addition to this, there are word choices which stand out as awkward and overly complicated in comparison to the rest of the book. It gives me the distinct feeling that the author went out of his way to use a thesaurus when he felt like his own words weren't impressive enough.

The story might be a good coming-of-age or young adult novel, but it's very generic and basic. There doesn't seem to be much of a deeper meaning behind the magic and swordplay. The characters are relatively bland and the main character is something of a poorly-executed stereotype - a boy with bad acne and no friends who suddenly finds out he's the savior of the world and is super good at everything because it's "in his blood."

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for middle graders. March 21, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Anders is a wonderful kid, one who will appeal to middle grade students, especially boys. It can be difficult to find books to entertain and hold the imagination of a middle grade boy. (I have one, getting him to read can be difficult at times).

This is a great book. Hopefully the author will write more stories. This book was fun to read and exciting. I give it 5 stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars Epic Journey of Fantasy or Life September 30, 2012
By Gayle
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Though this is a book written with young people in mind, it is a grand story for all
who are still young at heart. The characters are well rounded personalities
who capture your imagination and heart. Very "believable" story line
captures you from the first page. I enjoyed every word and felt drawn into the scenes.
Look forward to Book 2-3-4???
