Editorial Reviews

Review

Sword of MacLeod is a futuristic that will have you pouring over its pages to find out whether or not Raven and Beckett stay together. Its background of space stations, unknown planets, and privateer hideouts keeps you tied to the story until you are sure everything will work out well for two of the most dynamic characters to ever grace the stars. Ciorstan said she knew where the Sword of MacLeod was and would find it. Her father, Beckett MacLeod, would only venture off his beloved world of Alba for one reason -- to retrieve her. His is a simple world, one without technology and space science. However, the very things his Scottish ancestors had run away from would be the only way he would find her. Beckett needed a tracker and not just any tracker would do. He had to have the best, and Raven was the best. Upon meeting her, however, Beckett knew that there was more to this small, explosive female than her snug clothing revealed. Raven, on the other hand, was equally impressed by the big, beautiful Scotsman. In fact, she readily admitted that he was the most perfect man she had ever seen. This was business, however. She didn't really like the idea of looking for some kid, but the gold Beckett had shown her was enough to fix her ship, the TrackStar. It was badly in need of repair and the job couldn't be that hard. The job wasn't that hard, until Raven finds out that Beckett's daughter is in the hands of Slade, a privateer that Raven's previous acquaintance with was hardly pleasant. Beckett learns of Raven's past ties to the privateers and feels that she betrays him for his gold. It isn't until they are fleeing the privateer's planet in a worn-out TrackStar that Beckett realizes that Raven is frightened of a confrontation with Slade. Together, Beckett and Raven head to a newly discovered planet and begin their quest to find Ciorstan and Slade. It only takes one night of passion to build a wall of doubts in Raven's mind. She knows they both come from different worlds; their passion for each other will not survive. Continuing onward, they confront Slade, but Raven is hurt by a laser blast and Slade gets away with the Sword of MacLeod. Beckett's only concern is to get help for Raven and then head back to Alba and forget these past days. Their landing on Alba is far from perfect, but Raven convinces herself that she can protect herself from Beckett's advances for the two weeks it will take for a merchant ship to arrive. There is one obvious question -- can Alba protect itself from the technology that Raven represents? Raven's attempts to resist Beckett are futile, but her fear of eventual rejection was learned at a young age. Beckett is not looking for a mother for Ciorstan, but a companion and lover with which to share his future. When Slade and the privateers attack Alba, Beckett and Raven must fight for something other than their beliefs. They must fight for a world they both love, almost as much as they love each other.Beckett's old fashioned ways are charming. His smiles are alarming. His kisses are searing! Space is a lonely place once you've tasted paradise! Raven and Beckett create paradise every time they touch! Traveling through the stars never created this much tension! Karen Fox burns up the thrusters with Beckett and Raven!Karen Ellington -- Copyright © 1994-97 Literary Times, Inc. All rights reserved -- From Literary Times

3.0 out of 5 stars Fast Paced, Strong Heroine, but the hero's a dud, March 5, 1999

This review is from: Sword of MacLeod (Futuristic Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
The book is fast paced and the author presents a fully-fleshed out future-world. The heroine is very strong and well drawn. But here's the strange part - the romance seemed intrusive. I got so caught up in the heroin and her world that I was really jarred when we had the require gushing about the sex-appeal of the hero and how she couldn't keep her hands off of him. The sceens between the hero & heroine felt intrusive and forced. I didn't buy the attraction at all. I never understood what she saw in him. Some of the strongest parts of the book were towards the end when the heroine throught about all of the logical reasons why the hero wasn't for her and I totally agreed. Normally I want them to get together, but in this book I thought there had to be someone better then this for her. I'm sure I won't spoil the ending for anyone when I add that of course they stay together, but the pop-psychological resolution rang false. This author shows great potential and hopefully next time she will spend more effort on devising a hero worthy of her heroine.

5.0 out of 5 stars A woman of the future runs headlong into an old world Laird!, June 13, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Sword of MacLeod (Futuristic Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
I throughly enjoyed this book. Raven was a fascinating combination of worldliness and naitivity, while Beckett was the ever self possesed Laird of the Clan. When faced with technology and a world beyond his simple sense of honor and logic, he was compelled to rely on Raven while at the same time trying to maintain control. Their love affair was exciting, and liberally laced with real human emotion. Add to that a generous amount of humor and Karen Fox has created a cast of believable and real charaters. This is a book that leaves you with a warm sense of pleasure while at the same time you are desperatly wishing there were at least 10 more chapters.

3.0 out of 5 stars a romance with lots of thrilling action, April 19, 2002
This review is from: Sword of MacLeod (Futuristic Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
Sword of MacLeod has it all. It is a love story with great tender love scenes. A sci-fi fantasy with lots of action packed thrilling scenes. Its a novel with good character developement and wonderful secondary characters that make the story a whole. The plot is exciting and unpredictable. I really enjoyed this book. I've read several other books by Karen Fox and will have to count her amoung my favorites.

This is the story of a father, Beckett, from a backwards planet, must go after his head strong willful daughter, Ciorstan, who has gone insearch of the fabled Sword of MacLeod. She believes that she has figured out a old riddle that will take her to the sword and that the sword possesses magic which will help her planet through a terrible drought. Her planet's people don't believe in modern technology and only allow a few ships to land for trading purposes. She has runaway to find the sword to save her people. Beckett must leave the planet to find her. He hires the best tracker he can, Raven. Raven has a broken down ship that she can fix with Becketts fee so she agrees to help him find his daughter. Raven is widely travelled and knows the ins and the outs of star travel. She also has some deep fears and only Beckett can make those fears go away.

Together they face angry merchants, pirates, alien monsters and dangerous terrain to get his daughter back. Along the way they find passion and love. I enjoyed this book because I didn't know what was going to happen next. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes an exciting tale.
