What an absolutely charming and delightful book! I originally entered a giveaway to win this book (thanks Goodreads!) because the cover art looked fantastic and I figured I could give it to my daughter when she's older. I still will, but now I think I'll tell her she's "borrowing Mommy's copy." Nancy Yi Fan has created a world of sentient birds living--and warring--atop a mountain kingdom. The golden eagles from the mountaintop look down upon (literally and figuratively) the valley eagles. The eagle owls threaten to disrupt the eagles' rule (they can attack at night!). And a golden eagle prince brings shame to his family when he reveals he'd rather be a songbird.
I almost wish I'd read the previous book, Swordbird (written when the author was only twelve!0 before I started this one, but I'll definitely go back and read it now. I'll also be sure to check to see if my local library carries Nancy Yi Fan's books. If not, I'll certainly be requesting them!

During Dandelion's sky-born day celebration, her family is attacked and murdered by Kawaka a survivor from the evil Emperor Maldeor's army. Trying to defend her family she is seriously injured and left for dead. The exiled prince, Fleydur, finds the injured Dandelion on his way home to Sword Mountain and decides to bring her back to his family's castle.

This is an exciting tale the entire family will enjoy. Dandelion is strong and heroic even in the face of prejudices and heart-felt loss. Dandelion was tormented because she is thought of as a lesser class, born in the valley she is dark not golden, and teased relentlessly by eaglets and adults alike. This story showed that with her perseverance she enacted change. This story contained lots of action, bravery and a fight for change. Definitely written for the younger reader Sword Mountain not just entertained but taught moral lessons against discrimination and the joy of music. This was a safe, wholesome book for the younger reader.

This copy of Sword Mountain was given to me by Goodreads First Reads and Harper (Harper Teen) in exchange for an honest review.

And this one will not disappoint...
I just wish she would write more.
I love the lessons to be learned that Nancy intertwines thru her stories. I have read all 3 and am saving them for my Grand Children.
Great Series for all ages.
