Book Description

Historical Mystery Series June 1, 2006
The Latin inscription carved on the gleaming blade read “He who lives in falsehood slays his soul; he who lies, his honor.” If only they had known how true those words would prove to be. The Sword of Shame was lovingly crafted by a Saxon swordsmith shortly before the Norman invasion, and its constant companions are treachery and deceit. From the Norman Conquest of 1066, to an election-rigging scandal in 13th-century Venice, to the bloody battlefield of Poitiers in 1356—at the heart of every treasonous plot, every murder and betrayal, is the malign influence of the cursed sword. And as it passes from owner to owner, ill-fortune and disgrace befall all who wield the deadly blade. The Medieval Murders are Philip Gooden; Susanna Gregory, author of the Matthew Bartholomew series; Michael Jecks, author of the Templar series; Bernard Knight, author of the Crowner John series; and Ian Morson, author of the Falconer mystery series.

2.0 out of 5 stars Should have been better, January 3, 2007
This review is from: The Sword of Shame (Historical Mystery Series) (Paperback)
The Medieval Murderers are a group (originally 4 now grown to 6) of historical crime writers who are entirely too busy! Each book traces the history of a "cursed" object through the centuries with a short story. Michael Jecks does early 14th century West Country, Susanna Gregory does 14th century Cambridge, etc. It's a nice idea--I like all the authors and had high hopes--but it hasn't worked so far. The stories are sketchy and not well-connected, and the 2000-era "shocker" ending -- aren't. Medieval Murderers seem to be a marketing device. That's ok, but I can't imagine that anyone not already a fan of one of the members will be attracted by reading these books. For what it's worth, the first volume (The Tainted Relic) is marginally better than The Sword of Shame, 3-star maybe. It is to be hoped that in Volume 3 the Murderers will get their act together. They are all capable of fine work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Where did that blade come from?, June 27, 2009

A thoroughly enjoyable romp across about 700 years of history with the superior storytelling of Michel Jecks and company. The settings are interesting and the major characters are old friends from the five authors represented.

I haven't finished it yet, but one can see that this is a grand follow up to the first in the series ("The Tainted Relic"). Very much worth investigating! See the Latin phrase on the blade with the English transliteration.
