4.0 out of 5 stars Underrated post rock that deserves a listen!, February 6, 2002

There is a shortage of truly excellent post rock in this world. The Swords Project only has one release out yet and it is clear that they will in coming years, be among the most respected of this genre. This 8 piece band from Oregon has a sound simmilar to that of Mogwai or Godspeed You Black Emperor! but at the same time conjur a sound all of their own. Where Godspeed You Black Emperor! can sometimes seem dark and brooding, the swords project accomplish this while leaving a sense of hope flickering for the listener to take solice in.
They also use lyrics here and there in a few of the songs, (best used on the last track 'case study in pathetics'. When it comes down to it, this album is simply beautiful. Anyone who has heard it is asking the same question: "When will they release new material?" I highly reccomend this release. I would have given it five stars if it were a bit longer. (It runs 28 minutes)
Do yourself a favor and get this album!

Standout Tracks: Shannon's Wedding Song, Case Study In Pathetics

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent CD, July 15, 2002

As the previous reviewer said, these guys are like Mogwai. More so than GYBE in my oppinion. For comparison, Godspeed are alot darker and tend to focus more on a tense brooding strings/guitar combo. Sword's have a far more relaxing sound and tend to place less emphisis on specific instruments.

I ordered this EP on the strength of the track 'A new assasin' which you can hear in its entirety on the epitonic.com site.
After hearing the full thing, A new assasin is probably my favorite and is the closest they get to standard rock.

Apparently there is also a self released live albumn as well, but I have no idea where/if you can get it.

Rush out and grab this EP!

5.0 out of 5 stars A word from the record label, August 13, 2002
This review is from: Swords Project (Audio CD)
Portland, OR's seven-piece dynamo make the sounds of heaven's gates opening on their four song, 28-minute debut. Orchestral but not pompous, warm and yet very, very hot. An incredible start for a band that will surely turn heads.
