I purchased this item for my 17" Dell Studio laptop that has been shutting off due to high heat (usually during high end game play). This item did not yet have any reviews but looked promising. The price was right so I ordered it.
It fits my 17" laptop well, but the two fans are placed higher up on the stand. My laptop heat appears mostly low on the unit in the palm rest area. The unit has two USB port and a simple on/off button. The tray tilts, but I find the mechanism awkward, though it is functional. My biggest issue is that the unit did NOT come with a USB cable. No big deal right? Wrong. It only has two USB ports, which means in order to power the unit, you need a male to male USB cord, or an adapter to make the unit work, there is no other size USB connections on the unit. I tried just setting my laptop on the unit while I ordered the proper cord, but it heated up even faster and shut off again. I ended up putting my laptop on a wire cookie rack which actually allowed enough air flow for me to play my game, but certainly wasn't a long-term solution.
The USB cord arrived two days ago, and I put the unit through it's paces with a marathon game session. My laptop did not shut off and actually felt cooler than it normally would under regular use. However, after only two days, the fans are starting to make noticeable noise. There is also no way to turn off the blue LED lights without turning off the fans, but the laptop does cover the lights, so they don't really show or offend.
For cost and function I would give this unit 4 stars. However, for not coming with the proper USB cable, and requiring the user buy their own male to male cable, it loses 1.5 stars. For fan noise developing after only 2 days, it loses another .5 stars.
I will be sending this unit back and trying a different one.
