From the Manufacturer

Finally, you can get energy savings without compromise! Sylvania's Halogen Supersaver lamps bridge the gap between incandescent and CFL by offering both superior light quality and energy savings at an affordable price. They are a perfect replacement for incandescent lamps being phased out by the Federal legislation (EISA) and an excellent alternative to CFL when light quality is important. Available in familiar incandescent shapes, Halogen Supersaver lamps offer all the benefits of halogen technology: true color (100 CRI), instant-on, full dimming, and mercury free, with the energy savings consumers need.

I'm looking for dimmable light bulbs for chandeliers that won't exceed power requirements of the wall dimmers (typically 400W), which is pushing need for lower wattage bulbs in fixtures with higher bulb counts. I also want good light quality and adequate brightness. I find CFLs unacceptable in these applications, and was happy to find these halogen bulbs which are perfect 60W replacements. They make nice white light, have good brightness, are a good size, are instant-on and fully dimmable... basically everything I was looking for. The power usage isn't as low as CFLs but the difference in power costs gets smaller as bulb wattage goes down. Since I'm dimming these I expect them to last much longer than the full-power life rating on the box (true for incandescent bulbs, probably not true for CFLs.)

HOWEVER, out of 8 boxes (2-pack, 16 bulbs) 4 bulbs didn't work.... 25% failures right out of the box. These were carefully bubble wrapped to me, though I don't know what kind of handling they've had from the factory. I can't remember the last time I've found a dead bulb from the store, so I find this failure rate very unusual for an incandescent bulb. It makes me concerned about the reliability of the 75% that did light. Given the relatively high cost of these bulbs I'm obligated to try and exchange them, an additional hassle.

Update: Comments on problems submitted to the manufacturer have gone unanswered. Amazon rapidly replaced bad bulbs in first batch, and then bad bulbs in replacement batch, but unfortunately each of the replacement boxes had a dead bulb. I've given up on trying to get one box of 2 good bulbs, so returned the last box of dead bulbs for credit. All of those that lit are still working OK, so it seems that if they light they're OK. The only way to play this game is buy at least 25% more bulbs than you need (including spares) then plan to return all the dead ones for refund.

Update 5/18/2012: No failures out of a dozen bulbs, so they're lasting OK. Never did hear back from Sylvania.

Like another reviewer, they're fine when they work, but the failure rate is high. I ordered 4 and half didn't work. The replacements didn't work either.

Amazon handled the problem great though.

First, I have to point out I didn't buy these on Amazon. I bought a few boxes of them on sale at Lowes for a little over a dollar a box. That seemed like a good deal and a low cost risk to try some different lighting alternatives.

Who doesn't like to save money? At only 43 watts, these put out a respectable amount of good looking light. The problem is (I think) they get too hot to be used in the enclosed fixtures that are pretty much everywhere in most people's houses. I immediately put two of them in our enclosed ceiling fixture. While they worked fine for a while and put out nice light while doing so, about a month has gone by and they have both died with relatively little use.

I suspect they'd probably last longer in a table lamp or something that isn't completely enclosed but I can't really comment further than that because I only have one open floor lamp and I'm using CFLs in it.

Unfortunately, energy saving bulbs really need to be usable in basically all areas where standard incandescent are or it's pretty useless to buy them. It could just be this brand of halogens and maybe a better brand would last longer even in an enclosed fixture. I'm not really sure. But the fixtures did seem to heat up much more rapidly than they did with standard 60 watt incandescents. Of course, only two bulbs from all of the ones I bought have gone out so far but they are the two that got the most use. The others I installed around the house are hardly ever on. I expect they'll fail relatively quickly as well. Perhaps these bulbs simply weren't intended for this application but if that's the case, I didn't see it written anywhere on the box. You'd think it would be kind of important for them to inform the customer about an application that was only going to have this product lasting a few weeks rather than it's stated lifetime. This type of information also seems to be hard to find online without finding a light bulb guru and asking them directly.

This is going to be a problem with CFLs too, unfortunately. People who want to use them with ceiling fixtures are either going to have to acquire fixtures that aren't completely enclosed or they're going to have to keep replacing expensive bulbs on a frequent basis until CFLs that are rated for use in those conditions are much more widely available. I just bought a pack of CFLs at Walgreens and there were none available at that location that were obviously rated for use in enclosed light fixtures. Fortunately I only paid a dollar for a box of four of these halogens. I wouldn't even buy them again at that price. Much less anything higher. I did have high hopes for them. I'm not bashing them just to be down on greener technology.
