Sylvania's 6842PF is a 42-inch, widescreen (16:9) gas-plasma display compatible with progressive-scan and high-definition signals up to 1080i. This unit offers incredibly vivid, high-contrast images and is the ultimate addition to any home theater. Perfect for movies and other programs formatted for 16:9 aspect-ratio screens, the monitor's HD component-video inputs accept full 720p and 1080i HDTV signals from set-top boxes and DTV receivers, which are sold separately.

One of the main benefits of a plasma screen is the vivid and brilliant color display of over 16 million colors. Additionally, the 6842PF boasts extremely wide viewing angles (compared to most LCD screens), and easy placement due to its slim profile of less than 5 inches of depth. And like all plasma displays, the 6842PF is immune to the distortion and negative color balances one may encounter when using a conventional CRT television near flourescent lighting or speaker systems.

BOUGHT THIS TV ON THE 3RD OF DECEMBER VIA AMAZON.COM HOPING IT WOULD GET HERE SOONER THAN IT DID. I RECEIVED THE TV ON THE 14TH OF DECEMBER. NOT THAT BAD, BUT THIS TV SAT IN A WAREHOUSE FOR OVER 3 DAYS, BEFORE I FINALLY STARTED CALLING AND COMPLAINING ABOUT THE DELIVERY TIME. THE DELIVERY TIME HAD BEEN "PUSHED BACK" TWICE. I WAS TOLD THAT THE TRAVEL TIME WAS OVER 5 HOURS ONE WAY FROM THE WAREHOUSE TO MY HOME AND THEY WERE WAITING FOR MORE ORDERS TO COME AVAILABLE IN MY AREA BEFORE THEY MADE THE 10 HOUR ROUND TRIP. (THEY DIDN'T WANT TO MAKE THE TRIP FOR JUST ME, ALTHOUGH NOBODY SEEMED TO MIND TAKING MY $200 DOLLARS FOR DELIVERY FEE.) I AM PLEASED WITH THE TV I RECEIVED. I DID FIRST WHAT EVERYONE SAYS TO DO. I BOUGHT ONE LOCALLY. IT HAD SOUND PROBLEMS, WAS MORE MONEY, AND IN THE END, IT WAS RETURNED. I BOUGHT THIS TV VIA AMAZON FOR $400 DOLLARS LESS THAN I PAID FOR THE OTHER ONE. (INCLUDING THE SHIPPING FEE) I WAS SCARED AT FIRST, BUT IT ALL WORKED OUT. HERE'S SOME POINTS OF INTEREST ABOUT THIS TV.

1. IT IS JUST A MONITOR, IT HAS NO CABLE TUNER IN IT, MEANING YOU MUST HAVE A CABLE BOX, TIVO, VCR, ECT, TO CHANGE YOUR CHANNELS FOR YOU.

2. IT DOES HAVE SPEAKERS IN IT, HOWEVER, YOU WILL FIND THEM VERY CHEAP SOUNDING, MY COMPUTER SPEAKERS SEEM TO BE OF BETTER QUALITY. THIS IS NOT A JOKE, AND I AM NOT KIDDING, IF YOU DON'T HAVE SOME TYPE OF STEREO SYSTEM, LIKE SURROUND SOUND TO HOOK UP TO, YOU WILL NOT BE AMAZED WITH THE SOUND. THE SPEAKERS ARE OF VERY BAD QUALITY. ALTHOUGH I KNEW THIS BEFORE I BOUGHT ONE.

3. THE VIDEO QUALITY IS ACTUALLY REALLY GOOD, I CANNOT FIND ANYTHING TO COMPLAIN ABOUT HERE, THE COLOR IS GREAT, NO GHOST IMAGES, WHAT ELSE CAN I SAY.

4. THIS TV HAS AN S-VIDEO #2 HOOK UP ON THE SIDE, PLUS THE SOUND HOOK UP IS THERE AS WELL. MAKING CONNECTION OF KIDS GAMING EQUIPMENT, VIDEO CAMERAS, ECT A SNAP. THE TV I HAD BEFORE WAS UNDERNEATH THE BOTTOM, I PRACTICALLY HAD TO STAND ON MY HEAD CONNECT THINGS.

5. THE DELIVERY PERSON WHO ACTUALLY DELIVERED THIS TV WAS OUTSTANDING. HE BROUGHT IT INTO MY HOME, UNPACKED IT, AND WAITED UNTIL I TESTED THE TV BEFORE LEAVING. THEN HE TOOK ALL THE PACKAGING WITH HIM. (YOU KNOW HOW HARD PACKAGING IS TO GET RID OF WITH ALL THE FOAM, PAPER, PLASTIC, AND CARDBOARD.) YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT.

5. I AM GIVING A 4 STAR REVIEW DUE TO THE CHEAP SPEAKERS AND BULKY REMOTE THAT CANNOT BE USED TO CHANGE CHANNELS.

IN THE END I HAVE THIS TV HOOKED TO MY TIVO AND SURROUND SOUND, I AM EXTREMELY PLEASED WITH THE PURCHASE FOR THE MONEY, AND WOULDN'T HESITATE TO PURCHASE ANOTHER ONE IF NEEDED. SEARS SELLS THE IDENTICAL TV FOR OVER $400 MORE. THEY WILL NOT PRICE MATCH, I TRIED. THANKS FOR READING MY REVIEW.

I went into my local big box retailer with a 32" flat panel in mind (upgrading from a 27" CRT) and quickly realized that 42" is where it's at! After seeing this Sylvania in action and being incredibly impressed by the clarity and brightness, I went in search of the best price. I unexpectedly found it here at Amazon and bought. After having the TV for about two weeks now I'm very happy. Like I say the picture is great - no complaints - but I would like a more robust selection of inputs/outputs. This thing also looks great mounted - with just the thin frame oulining the screen.

I read all the reviews before I bought this TV, and they were very helpful. Thank you to all who wrote about it! This is why I am writing a review (hopefully this will help someone else make his or her decision)
I bought this TV for my husband's birthday and he loved it. The sound system in the TV is terrible but knowing this ahead of time we put surround sound on the TV and it is great. I have to say that this TV is excellent for the money. I have recommended it to my friends and other family members.
