Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

If you're looking for an affordable way to bring your HD-ready TV into the high-definition world--or to venture into the world of high-definition broadcasting prior to picking up an HD-ready set--Sylvania's 6900DTD high-definition TV/digital TV receiver is an appealing choice. The cable-ready set-top box features built-in NTSC and ATSC tuners for both terrestrial SD (standard-definition) and HDTV reception--just hook up an aerial antenna and you're in business. Sylvania recommends its DX multidirectional antenna, model DTA-3500.

If you don't yet own the HD-ready TV of your dreams, you'll be delighted to learn that the 6900DTD supports simultaneous SD and HD outputs, allowing you to build a high-definition empire from the receiver on up, enjoying clear, ghost-free images on your current set. Or if you do have an HDTV, this feature lets you watch standard TV in a second room on a lesser set. Alternately, you can feed a PVR or VCR with an S-video or composite-video signal while you watch the component-video output on your component-video-capable or HD-ready TV, since the receiver's component-video terminals offer selectable output modes for 1080i, 480p (EDTV), and 480i (SD).

Hook the Sylvania up to a compatible audio/video receiver and multichannel speaker system through a coaxial digital-audio interconnect (not supplied) and you'll be ready to enjoy enveloping, 5.1-channel Dolby Digital surround sound from select ATSC broadcasts.

You can configure the output for either widescreen 16:9 or standard 4:3 televisions and monitors, choosing from letterbox, zoom, and full-screen outputs. An easy-to-use electronic program guide (EPG) displays TV programming information, and full V-Chip parental controls let you restrict mature programming from both NTSC and ATSC sources.

From the Manufacturer

The Sylvania 6900DTD set-top box/tuner allows users to view digital broadcasts (where available) on HD- and ED-monitor televisions, or to convert digital broadcasts to analog signals to view on standard televisions. The device receives both ATSC HDTV digital broadcast signals and NTSC analog broadcast signals, and features a video output format selectable for 16:9 and 4:3 TVs and monitors. It also offers letterbox, zoom, and full output modes for both TV formats. The simultaneous video outputs allow connections for viewing and recording (PVR/VCR) at the same time.

Other features include Dolby Digital audio for ATSC, an SPDIF output for connection to home theater system, a 26-key remote control and an onscreen menu, an easy-to-use electronic programming guide, and V-chip and closed captioning options from an ATSC and NTSC source. For component connections, the 6900DTD offers an S-video output, three component video outputs, a composite video output for standard analog sets and recorders, left and right fixed analog audio outputs, and a coaxial digital audio output. The unit measures 14.17 by 2.95 by 12.99 inches (W x H x D) and is Energy Star-compliant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Standard, July 27, 2004

This has component outputs, the analog way to transmit a HDTV signal. There is nothing wrong with that, because they carry full resilution of HDTV. Almost no Projection HDTV has DVI, smaller HDLCDs do not, really only expensive Plasma, LCD, and Projector sets do. And thats great, because it preserves the digital qualiy, but every HDTV set will work fine with this, and there is no basis for a one star rating.

1.0 out of 5 stars good for older tv's..not new, July 8, 2004

Hi!
This tuner does not have a DVI output. DVI is on all newer sets
or monitors. It will work fine for all "older" tv sets. I have seen
50" hdtv monitors at $999.00 locally soon they will have tuners
built in. A Local company here 5 years ago announced in the local newspaper that they made all the components for the recivers for
less than $200 so box prices should be dropping as they were
$3700 then.
Ps. don't buy a hdtv that does not have DVI input! In my area there
are up to 22 digital and hd tv chanels...the future of tv is here!
I hope this helps.
