Most, if not all, vehicles are equipped with Long Life 9007 bulbs from the factory. Long Life usually means the bulbs were designed with filaments and gas mixtures designed to extend the duration at which the light output remains usable, up to approximately 800-1300 hours in a laboratory environment. This is in comparison to 2500-5000 hours from HID capsules (D1/D2/D3/D4) which cost $100-$250 per capsule to replace. In addition, white LED headlights/foglights last approximately 25,000 to 50,000 hours.

Sylvania does not keep it a secret that their SilverStar and SilverStar Ultra line of headlights are not designed for longevity. According to Sylvania for their 9007s, their SilverStar lasts 150 hours, the SilverStar Ultra lasts 200 hours, while the XtraVision lasts 375 hours. The 9008/H13 standard bulb can go up to 1000 hours, while the Sylvania SilverStar 9008/H13 is rated at only 325 hours and the 9008/H13 XtraVision is rated for 500 hours.

In the SilverStars, the gas mixture and filaments were designed to compensate for the loss of light transmission from the filter (tint) on the bulb glass. The SilverStars are essentially "ricer" bulbs designed to make the color temperature appear near 4000K (HID white) but this costs you lifespan.

From experience, the XtraVisions will last at least 3-4 years of normal use (about 30 minutes every workday). Daytime Running Lights and automatic headlights SEVERELY reduce bulb lifespan because they keep the bulbs running at full voltage whenever you use the car contrary to popular belief. In addition, headlight bulbs are rated at 12.8 VDC, which means that the rated hours were obtained from testing at 12.8 VDC. Running the bulbs at a higher voltage, like the 14.

I have used these on 3 different cars over the years and will continue to do so. I like that they do not stress the factory wiring nor need any changes to the headlight housings.

According to the packaging they only last about 1/2 last as long as the stock headlight bulbs. Well I guess I do not drive that much at night as I have yet to wear out a set.

I do know that I have replaced factory bulbs that were still working after 10 years with these due to the fact that even thought they still worked that they were noticeably dim.

FYI All headlight bulbs become dimmer due to usage as they age. So if you have old / original bulbs and want a brighter bulb that gives you more distance to the front and sides without spending a lot of money buy a set of these. They may not last as many years as the factory ones yet the light pattern is much better and these will last several times as long as some of the other bulbs like the "Silver Stars" and similar bulbs. Also these are "legal" to use. While some of the other bulbs out there are not "legal" and may damage your wiring and headlight housings.

If you really wish to make a serious "legal" improvement to your headlights. I would recommend upgrading to a relay headlight harness and a set of these bulbs.

Thank you.

I have read reviews for this product that said that the users did not notice a difference. And while I will admit, I do not know how old the lights I replaced were (all standard lights loose candle power as they get older) but, having said that... I love these lights! Where I noticed the biggest difference is with reflector surfaces like signs and warning markers. Man, these things just jump out at you! And from a huge distance away! They were simple to install and fit perfectly. Great price too!

2005 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4. Replacement for stock headlights. Light is much whiter and has a little longer throw. No, they are not HID or anywhere close, but they are a very good replacement for the stock bulbs that after 6 years were getting a little dim. The Xtravision line appear to be the middle ground between long-lived stock and the short-lived extra bright halogens. I also installed the 9006 version as fog lights and together they light up the road as far as I practically and safely need to see. I would definately buy again and probably will just to have a back up set.

***UPDATE*** I took these on a 10 day Texas to Colorado round trip. They worked great. Definately lit up the road on a dark, starless night. I had a couple of cars flash me thinking that my brights were on--I don't think they would want to see my brights! I really noticed how they lit up the traffic signs and road markers way forward so that I could respond to them instead of reacting to them.

I bought a set of these as one of my origional bulbs burned out and figured I would update my 95 Volvo 850 with some brighter beams.Work the night shift so drive mostly at night these lasted 3 months unacceptable as far as bulbs go so put origional rated bulbs back in. They were brighter but unless you have lots of disposible income would not recommend these.

Due to tougher economic times, I decided that when my 1999 1/2 New Jetta's passenger side headlight went out, that I'd replace them myself. I'd never replaced headlight bulbs myself before so I had to look up the proper model and these Sylvania XtraVision's seemed to have the right balance of performance, price and longevity. I was excited to see the difference between the OEM's and the XtraVisions.

Unfortunately, my old mechanic must have liked these too as the XtraVisions were the ones already installed. I don't remember when he replaced them so I don't know what the lifespan was. I'll update my review should they go out in the near or distant future. My Jetta has daytime running lights so it should be interesting to see what impact that has on the lifespan. I also want to note that since I didn't even know that I had different bulbs when they were changed out, I did not notice a difference in visibility.

Still, if my VW mechanic who also services Audi's, chose to use the Sylvania XtraVision halogen bulbs, I'm pretty confident that these are more than acceptable for my use.
