Customer Reviews

I returned it immediately.

I do wish that the remote could turn the player on and off and could control the volume so that I didn't have to climb in the back seat to turn it on for my toddler.
Mandy Montgomery
Sound was good for him and the picture was clear.

I've just finished putting my new '7014 through its paces, & I'm pleased. I primarily bought it to have a little distraction in my workshop, where it'll spend almost its whole life plugged in. And while it doesn't have GREAT sound, it's a pretty good CD player, easier to find a place for amid my clutter than the boom-box, & only a bit bigger than the old Walkman. (If I close the lid almost all the way, on a rubber stopper or something, this gives better midrange.) The little remote is dustproof & damp-resistant, PERFECT for the shop, & lets me control tracks & volume from at least 20 feet away. All in all, this is exactly what I need, at a good price.

For a couple of DVDs I tried, I had to have the volume cranked to the pegs to hear clearly in an open room. This might not be a problem with earbuds. The good news is that there was almost no distortion with louder sounds & soundtrack music.

The biggest downer I can foresee is the batteries. While the LiPoly cells are generally a great device, eventually they will start to lose power-holding ability. In the DVD player, there's no easy (or presently cheap) way to replace the cells. I'm hoping that the internal charger circuit doesn't do something odd to "protect" the dead cells by disabling the unit -- because the '7014 looks like it could be useful for quite some time with either the wall-wart or car cord.

Speaking of which: there's a good market for those cords. I sold my car-cord to another owner (whose dog had chewed theirs up) for $15.

Also, I'm not sure I'd be happy having LiPoly batteries around small children, large dogs, or clumsy adults, as I read they're capable of bursting into flame if shorted or punctured. That's probably why they're usually sealed into devices like this.

All in all, it's better than I was expecting for only $60.

You get what you pay for should be what this DVD player is called. I received it yesterday, inserted a DVD and three things popped out at me.
1) It feels cheap. You can actually feel the control buttons click when you click them. The plastic case squeaks when you squeeze it just a little.
2) The picture on the LCD screen is very grainy which is multiplied when you think it is only a 7 inch screen.
3) The volume when turned all the way up is barely heard, even with several sets of headphones. If someone is talking or the TV is on, you literally cannot hear anything on the DVD player.

I am sending it back today and will buy one that is twice the price. As they say, "buy cheap...buy twice."

Don't waste your money on this player.

I have owned many portable DVD players. I commute over 1 hour and a half (one way), so I end up watching a lot of movies on the train. Most players last me 3 or 4 years before breaking (due to high usage). This particular player is one of the worst ones that I have ever owned. After I intially bought it and brought it home, the remote control broke within 4 weeks. I replaced the battery thinking that it was the battery, but the remote just would not work. I brought it back and exchanged it for a new model. It lasted just over 90 days (convieniently right after the 90 day warranty expired). The remote worked, but the second DVD player won't play movies now. I get the error message stating that the dvd player is 'open' even though it is not open. I tried everything to make it think that it is not 'open', but nothing seems to help. This makes it 2 dvd players in 4 months that broke on me, that is just unacceptable. Also beware that the sound in the earphones is really weak. If you are in a car or a train, you will need to turn on the subtitles, and that is because it is not loud enough with the earbuds. BUYER BEWARE.

We initially bought one which worked great for my 3 year old for traveling... however not even a month later and it went from working absolutely fine to suddenly not reading any dvd's. No matter what we did, it would just spin and spin saying "loading", and then eventually give up and say "no disc". Not sure what was wrong but we were about to leave for another trip so exchanged it for a new one. Again worked absolutely great... for not even a month. We watched one movie with no problems, took it out, put in a new dvd, and it did the exact same thing, would not recognize it. Put in the movie which we had just watched.. wouldn't recognize it. Tried again for the heck of it a few hours later... no luck. Although when it was working it was great, would not recommend this at all as it just suddely stops working for no reason and is definitely not reliable. Also, as a side note, we did not heavily use this at all, only occasionally for travelling, and my son was under constant supervision, it was not treated roughly at all!

So far, so good! Bought it to keep our toddler from losing her mind during our 2000-mile road trip, basically had Yo Gabba Gabba on loop the whole time. Headphones are a must, as the sound from the DVD player's speakers is crap, but that's ok. Like I needed to hear "There's A Party In My Tummy" AGAIN. ;) Thanks!

I have purchased two "Sylvania" DVD players. They are products that work temporarily before breaking. First one worked for a few years, 2nd for 90 days. I called the manufacturer, and they are not customer service friendly. I don't recommend buying these products. Unlike many mfgs. that care about returns, they apparently don't.
