Sylvester Nemes' Softhackles: The Life, Times, and Flies of a Remarkable Man

I am not sure of what my expectations were when I purchased the video. Maybe it was just to hear the modern authority on soft hackles talk about our favorite subject. Maybe it was to see the master himself actually tie these simple but elegant flies.
For whatever reason I did enjoy the video and found that most interesting is that we all fret over tying the perfect fly while Syl just seems to tie the most beautiful flies without any notion that a single wrap may not be perfectly laid.

That elusive 5th star would have been granted if there was video of Syl in the water demonstrating his technique of fishing these wonderful flies. Maybe the director left that out for `Nemes, Part Two'.

Great to see the master in the flesh. The essence of genius is making everything simple. Nemes flies achieve that in spades.

One can see that age is catching up with Sylvester Nemes. However, the video is still informative and entertaining if one forgives the occasional (more like often) forgetfullness displayed by Mr. Nemes. The great downfall of this video, lies not with Mr. Neme's tying ability, but rather the lack of any on-stream demostration of his fishing techniques.

Mr. Neme's has been wet fly fishing for over 50 years ... why not demonstrate his on-stream abilities for others to both learn from and enjoy.

Hopefully, there will be a second dvd in the near future that will address this issue.

OMG. Is this guy boring. It was like listening to my grandfather tell war stories, but it was more like listening to an old geezer teach you something that you wanted to learn. Syl is a real diamond, and if you want to learn some tricks about tying soft hackle this is your video. He did not show us how to fish them, but he sure knew how to tie them, I highly recommend this video. As a bonus you get to know the man, and that was just as important as the instruction.
