4.0 out of 5 stars For a baby, December 30, 2002

This review is from: Sylvia Long's Mother Goose Block Books (Board book)
I was so excited to order the Sylvia Long Molther Goose Board Books because my 7 month old daughter loves books, but I was disappointed. While the books are beautiful and she likes them, they really cannot double as building blocks as they are marketed. All babies put everything in their mouths, which is something the manufacturer overlooked. When I gave her one of the books Christmas morning of course it went directly in her mouth and in less than a minute the front cover basically melted in her mouth and some of the paper came off. I definitely cannot leave the blocks for her to play with because they will be ruined in no time. Unlike other board books that have withstood hours of mouthing, I have to make sure I'm with her at all times when she plays with these in case some of the paper comes off which is a choking hazard. Bummer.

5.0 out of 5 stars We *love* this Mother Goose board book set!, March 24, 2006
This review is from: Sylvia Long's Mother Goose Block Books (Board book)
My 15 month old *loves* these books! She likes to read them, play with them, and hand them to me to read them to her. She also loves to take them out of the box and then put them back in. I'm going buy this set for my sister for her baby shower!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Block Books, April 25, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Sylvia Long's Mother Goose Block Books (Board book)
Just got these block books for my 8 & 1/2 months old. The books are more sturdy than I expected (comparing with other board books that we have.)

My son put the books in his mouth immediately when he saw them. However, the books didn't get destroyed (at least not yet.) In addition, unlike other board books, the pages won't stick together after mouthing.

Although you can pile them up pretty well, don't expect them to be the same as regular blocks. Needless to say, they are still books.

Overall, they are nice and sturdy and my son enjoys playing with them.

The board books themselves are great - nice and chubby, cute illustrations and just a few words on each "page" so as to keep up with rapid turning from the baby. But the box it came in is so flimsy it will not hold up for very long. I would consider the box as gift wrapping not a permanent storage place for the books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally! A Mother Goose My Daughter Loves!, August 27, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sylvia Long's Mother Goose Block Books (Board book)
I love Nursery Rhymes, but could not get my young toddler to pay much attention to the several good Mother Goose books we had. With so many great books on our shelves designed specifically for toddlers, they just could not compete.

This set has the same elements that make other, newer, toddler books so successful. Most important is that there are only a few words per page. Toddlers cannot wait to turn the pages of any book, so traditional nursery rhyme books with whole, or even several, verses per page are difficult for them to sit still for. Possibly even more important, as they are just learning vocabulary, they need pictures that illustrate what the words mean, so they can see AND hear. A whole rhyme for one picture is hard for them to follow. With this set they see a picture for every line, so they can follow the meaning better. This is doubly important with Mother Goose, written long ago, that often has archaic words children don't hear in every day talk around them.

With many kinds of blocks so available and inexpensive, few children really need books they can build with. I don't think that that is really the point of block books. I think it just adds to the really whimsical and old-fashioned feel of the set, from the beautiful illustrations to the sweet box the books are packaged in. The format does give the books very thick pages, which I like - way sturdier than most board books. However, the books are still cardboard and parents should use judgment on what a paper product will endure. The box is laminated but is thinner cardboard. We keep it on a shelf and take it down for story time. My daughter loves to reach in choose the books one at a time. As we finish we make a stack of each color. She likes to put them back in, but I have to help because they only fit if placed in an orderly fashion.

We love this so much I am considering getting the other block books sets, but she has so many basic concepts books that she already knows most of the content at 21 months. I wish the publishers would come out with another set as sweet as these with something new - such as newer short poems or rhymes.

5.0 out of 5 stars My son LOVES this set!!!, May 21, 2008

This review is from: Sylvia Long's Mother Goose Block Books (Board book)
My son received this as a gift when he was born. As soon as he was old enough to hold them in his hands he loved them! He loved hearing me read the rhymes and then would sleep with them. Now he is almost 2 and still loves these books, he will sit and pretend to read the books, turning the page and saying "piggy, wee-wee-wee, home" and phrases like that. They are the perfect size for little ones and they love the rhymes! I just purchased two sets to give as baby shower gifts. The only downside to the books is my son was able to tear/break apart some of the books when playing with them, so they aren't as sturdy as other board books.

I bought this for my own daughter when she was 1, and now I often give it as a gift. There's 16 small books (about 3x3 I'd guess) each is about 4-6 pages long. Each has a familiar nursery rhyme--One, two, buckle my shoe......Wee Willie Winkie.....There was a crooked man...... I find they're a nice change of pace from the standard "board books" because they're "toddler sized" and even tho my daughter is now 3, she still plays with them often. Sylvia Long's illustrations are, of course, beautiful.
