1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing
I bought this because it got so many rave reviews and was pretty disappointed. Much of the original text of these rhymes were missing, and I realized too late that animals don't really replace people. I was happy to pick up a used copy of The Original Mother Goose, with all the nursery rhymes I had as a child.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sylvia Long's Mother Goose, April 3, 2000

This review is from: Sylvia Long's Mother Goose (Hardcover)
This is a beautifully illustrated version of classic Mother Goose stories and rhymes. I had been waiting to introduce Mother Goose to my fourteen-month old daughter because some of the stories are a little scary. I read an enthusiastic review about this edition in one of my parenting magazines and quickly made my order. The words are nestled around beautiful images that completely engage the adult. It is a fun experience for both the parent and the child to read this book. The colors and drawings are imaginative and compelling and convey the storyline in a positive, whimsical manner. I love the Humpty Dumpty page where instead of coming to an unhappy outcome Humpty the Duckling gets help hatching from his shell when the egg he is nesting in rolls off the wall. This and other stories are illustrated in the way that children understand these wonderus tales.

This is the most beautifully illustrated Mother Goose book I have seen. Sylvia Long has taken her own interpretations of these classic rhymes and turned them into a wonderful imaginative feast for the eyes. The animal characters behave so life-like as they take the place of their human counterparts! I also like the way the author groups the rhymes according to themes. For example, all the rhymes containing words about specific animals, physical traits or characteristics tend to be grouped together. There is also an index of first lines in the back of the book.

My daughters continually pour over the images every day, and were even inspired to write and illustrate their own interpretations in their personal copybooks. The rhymes are classic, but in this book, the images tell their own stories as well!

5 Stars.

This is a wonderful book. The book takes you through more than 75 classic Mother Goose Rhymes including Jack and Jill, Old Mother Hubbard, Little Boy Blue, and Little Robin Red-breast.

Each rhyme is superbly illustrated allowing your youngster to understand the meaning of the rhyme through pictures.

This is a keepsake book that will surely be passed down from one generation to the next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming, November 13, 2001
This review is from: Sylvia Long's Mother Goose (Hardcover)
I am a school librarian constantly looking for nice editions of familiar nursery rhymes. This is one of the best books I have found in a long time. It has a nice collection of familiar and unfamilar rhymes. Each page has nicely done illustrations to support the rhyme. Sylvia Long identifies in the beginning of the book to look at each picture and look for the "bridge item" that is found in the next picture. Should keep kids busy with these rhymes for a long time.

This is one of the most beautiful collections of Mother Goose. The selection is well thought out, as is the page layout. The illustrations are just gorgeous. The quality of the materials is tops -- the paper is thick stick, coated. The jacket cover is also beautiful, and the book has a sewn in satin ribbon pagefinder. This is a perfect gift for a new baby.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good choice for toddlers with short attention spans, December 16, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Sylvia Long's Mother Goose (Hardcover)
I had bought The Real Mother Goose, (Ill. by Blanche Fisher Wright), since it was the version read to me as a child. But in trying to get my very rambunctious 2 & 3 year olds to sit for it was impossible. There was too much text. Sylvia Long's new version is an incredible treat for the eye. With only one or two rhymes per page, there is enough pictures to keep even the squirmiest 2 year old sitting in my lap.

5.0 out of 5 stars BRAVO!, September 28, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Sylvia Long's Mother Goose (Hardcover)
This is a masterpiece of a collection! On every level this book goes above and beyond the call of duty. The art is detailed and imaginative. The text is true to the original rhymes, which is not usually the case. In addition, there are rhymes found here that are often omitted from other collections. Long is truly a genius! Children of all ages will love this book. I highly recommend this masterpiece to anyone with children.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Award winner, November 30, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Sylvia Long's Mother Goose (Hardcover)
As I have read this book with my 2 and 4-yr old grandsons, I have thought that it must have won an award. The glowing reviews of others on your site seem to validate my opinion. Sylvia Long's choice of rhymes and illustrations for each two-page spread provides an opportunity for Grannie and the boys to communicate about the meaning of these old rhymes. The boys understand their meaning because of the beautiful illustrations that give the rhymes a new life in our modern world.

This is the most beautiful Mother Goose ever written. Children are mesmerized by the artistry, and even adults feel cozy and warm reading the familiar rhymes, and searching for the hidden treasures in Long's depictions. A perfect baby gift, or children's birthday present!
