Product Description

Amazon.com Review

With new computer viruses appearing on the Internet and being featured in the news almost every day, it pays to protect your Mac from unwelcome infections. Not only does Norton AntiVirus 7.0 protect your computer from macro viruses (the most common form of virus on the Macintosh), but it even monitors for virus-like activity indicating that you could have a virus.

If you suspect that a virus has already infected your Mac, you can start up from the Norton CD and scan your computer before you even install the software. Installation is simple, and only requires you to select a level of protection from "No Protection," if you prefer to scan for viruses manually, to "Full Protection," which will scan all programs, files, and e-mail attachments whenever you download or use them.

If you already use Norton Utilities 6.0, then installation of Norton AntiVirus 7.0 will even add an AntiVirus button to the Norton Utilities main control screen. Another advantage of Norton AntiVirus 7.0 is the LiveUpdate feature. This allows you to check for updates to the Norton AntiVirus 7.0 application and virus definitions with a single click, or to specify times to check automatically when you are online.

Once you have scanned all the files and applications on your hard drive the first time, checking for viruses on new files that you download is so fast that you hardly notice it happening. In all, Norton AntiVirus 7.0 provides a user- friendly and extremely powerful way of keeping your Mac virus-free and protected. --Daniel Jardine

Amazon.com Product Description

Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh finds and repairs infected files, protecting against Macintosh viruses and macro viruses, to keep your data safe and secure. It also automatically scans incoming e-mail attachments for viruses. LiveUpdate technology provides easy updating of virus definitions over the Internet to keep you prepared for the latest threats from e-mail messages, Internet downloads, file servers, and shared disks. You can also get prompt assistance with infected files from the Symantec AntiVirus Research Center (SARC).

5.0 out of 5 stars NAV 7.0 Offers Good Protection for Macs, February 22, 2001
This review is from: Norton AntiVirus 7.0 (CD-ROM)
"Norton AntiVirus 7.0" by Symantec offers Mac users good protection from most "known" computer viruses, not just the "macro" viruses which did infect some Macintosh systems before Microsoft made a patch available to MS Word users late last year. (Be sure to use the "Word Count" feature on any "old" MS Word files that were created prior to using NAV 7.0, or after installing the MS Word patch, when using NAV 6.0.)

While NAV 7.0 offers the same LiveUpdate feature as NAV 6.0, I have found that this dial-up feature, (which your modem can access directly or through an ISP with the Apple Remote Access control panel enabled), seems to download new virus definitions somewhat less often than the previous version, or about once a month. However, when I have used my browser to access the relevant area on the Symantec website, I seem to be able to "update" virus definitions, libraries, and vir.scan.dat files more often.

The NAV 7.0 "live updates" take less time than do the NAV 6.0 ones, and the anti-virus detection goes on in the background. The few times I have received "warnings" have been when I was installing software (without disabling this anti-virus application) or otherwise making some modification of a setting on the System folder. NAV 7.0 interfaces very well with Mac OS 9.1 and OS 9.04. (I hope it interfaces with Mac OS X.)

This software is also part of Norton SystemWorks 1.0, so if you purchase that application software you do not need to buy NAV 7.0 separately, (although I did so because I bought SystemWorks 1.0 later). In SystemWorks 1.0, there are separate buttons for NAV 7.0 and LiveUpdate, as well as for Norton DiskDoctor; Speed Disk; FileSaver, UnErase, and Volume Recover, (which I had had to disable with Mac OS 9.0 and OS 9.04, but now these last three features work fine with Mac OS 9.1). If you suspect an infection of your hard disk, you can restart your Mac by using the CD-ROM as your start-up disk, while holding down "c" on your keyboard. Be sure to disable any password protection first.

In this separate version of NAV 7.0, the LiveUpdate is part of the application. (If you click on the "Apple" and read "About Norton AntiVirus," you can see this summary: the creation date of your "Current Norton AntiVirus Defs file"; the creation date of your Current Norton AntiVirus Library file"; the creation date and versions of the current vir.scan.dat files; and the creation date of your Current Norton AntiVirus Macro Scan Lib file. This information helps you to keep up your anti-virus LiveUpdates when you choose not to have regularly scheduled ones set in your Preferences.

The Preferences for NAV 7.0 are excellent. You can customize those areas that you wish to protect, and you can perform a manual scan at any time. You can turn on and off "Auto Protect." The Scan/Repair Preference is excellent--you can choose several levels of auto repair, from minor to major fixes. A complete report is created which you can save and print. You can set both General and Custom Preferences to reflect the level of protection you want. As well, you can perform preventive actions, and decide how you wish to be alerted, and for how long, if a potential virus or virus-like activity is detected on your computer.

I recommend Norton AntiVirus 7.0 highly. You can use any e-mail application, internet browser, and online service with peace of mind, knowing that you have this software protection. In addition, I recommend that you obtain and install Norton Personal Firewall 1.0 (Macintosh) by Symantec to insure even more protection for the files on your Macintosh computer.
