Amazon.com Review

Norton SystemWorks 2001 provides an integrated suite of software applications that cover almost every aspect of keeping your Mac running smoothly, and fixing problems when they arise. The suite consists of four components. Utilities 6.0, one of the best known Mac disk utility packages, offers a full range of disk and file maintenance functions, allowing you to recover badly damaged disks, fix minor disk and file damage, optimize your drive by defragmenting files and applications, and recover accidentally deleted files. If the worst happens, and you find that you can't even start up from your Mac's hard drive, the Norton SystemWorks 2001 CD also works as a start-up disc, giving you a chance to recover files and fix the damaged drive.

Virus protection, in the form of Norton AntiVirus 7.0, is simple and comprehensive. Version 7.0 of the AntiVirus application not only protects you from Macro viruses, which are the most common form of virus on the Mac, but will even scan e-mail attachments as you download them, to warn of potential infection before the file has a chance to infect your computer. It even integrates itself into the main Norton Utilities control screen, so that all your Norton applications are available from a single launch pad. The LiveUpdate feature keeps both the Norton applications and the essential virus definition files up to date by automatically checking for updates when you connect to the Internet, or at prescheduled times.

Backing up your essential files is always advisable, but often difficult to do effectively. Dantz Retrospect Express allows you to automate the process, backing up to removable media, another hard drive, or to an Internet archive with ease. The wide range of configuration options takes some time to configure, but once this is done, backing up becomes a single-click operation. Finally, Aladdin Spring Cleaning allows you to keep your valuable disk space free by deleting unwanted and unused files, duplicate files, temporary Internet browser caches, and even removing unnecessary code from some software applications.

Mac users looking for a total troubleshooting and maintenance package for their computer will find that Norton SystemWorks 2001 provides a solution that is hard to beat. --Daniel Jardine

Amazon.com Product Description

Norton SystemWorks for the Mac contains applications that can keep your machine running smoothly. Norton Utilities is the popular solution for disk repair, disk optimization, and data recovery. It finds and repairs disk problems with the click of a button, organizes files on your hard drive for fastest access, and restores files that have been deleted accidentally. If the hard drive won't even restart, you can run Norton Disk Doctor from the bootable CD. The new Volume Recover feature can rebuild a disk's entire directory structure, increasing the chances of successful data recovery. Regular use of Norton Utilities can even help you fix disk problems before they cause serious trouble. SystemWorks offers virus protection with AntiVirus 7.0. New viruses are appearing every day, bringing potential danger to your Mac from Internet downloads, e-mail attachments, network file servers, Zip disks, floppy disks, and more. Norton AntiVirus finds and repairs infected files, including ones containing Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel macro viruses, the most common types of viruses found on Macintosh systems. It even scans incoming e-mail attachments as you're downloading them to make sure they don't contain dangerous code. With Aladdin Spring Cleaning, you can free up space on your hard drive by safely and completely uninstalling old programs and their related files--without deleting anything you still need. Use it to get rid of outdated applications, extensions, preferences, fonts, aliases, and other files. It's also great for removing the clutter left over from Internet sessions, including cache files, cookies, and history logs. Retrospect Express Backup from Dantz backs up all your important data. It lets you copy files quickly and easily to a wide range of removable media, including CD-R, CD-R/RW, Zip, Jaz, SuperDisk, magneto-optical, and DVD devices. You can also back up to a secure site over the Internet. The EasyScript wizard lets you schedule automatic, unattended backups.

Both Norton Utilities and Norton AntiVirus include Symantec's exclusive LiveUpdate technology for fast, easy updating right over the Internet. UseLiveUpdate to download software updates for both programs, as well as the latest virus definitions for Norton AntiVirus. LiveUpdate can check for updates automatically on a regular schedule, so you don't have to remember to do it yourself. Get one year of free virus definition and software updates included with purchase of Norton SystemWorks for Macintosh; annual subscriptions are available for subsequent updates.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Norton: easy to use and effective., December 9, 2000

SystemWorks for Macintosh combines Norton Utilities with Norton Anti-Virus, Aladin Clean Sweep, and Datz Retrospect. The Norton suite installs effortlessly (easier then NAV for PC in my experience), you install Clean Sweep and Retrospect seperately off the same disk. SystemWorks has the familiar Symantec features: control panels (the Norton products can all be accessed through a main panel), and live update. A new to me feature is that when (for example) you run "software update" NAV will detect it and ask you if you want to suspend auto-protect while you're installing software. I happen to like Norton products and have had good luck with them, this product for Mac is no exception. I think Norton SystemWorks is a must have for any Mac home user.

5.0 out of 5 stars How did I cope without Systemworks!!!, December 27, 2001

This review is from: Norton SystemWorks 1.0 (CD-ROM)
I bought Norton Systemworks after suspecting I had downloaded a virus on my Mac. I had never used the product (or any other like it) before, so I was pleased that it was user friendly and extremely efficient. I ran both Antivirus and Utilities (both included in the price) to check my system for bugs and general "bad things" and within 2 hours, my Mac was back to its old self.

I am impressed by the wealth and versatility of all the other programms that are included on the CD-ROM (like Aladdin Spring Clean and Dantz Retrospect). Similar to the flagship programmes, they are easy to use, easy to install and set-up, and most importantly they work well.

I would reccommend Norton Systemworks Macintosh for anybody who is having problems with their Mac, or for people who want that extra peice of mind. My only problem is that I wish I had bought it sooner, then my Mac might not have kept crashing orignally.

Fully deserves the 5 star award.

2.0 out of 5 stars Norton who???, August 28, 2002
By
Bruce West (Atlanta, GA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Norton SystemWorks 1.0 (CD-ROM)
Version 1.0 is average at best and this is also only able to run in OS 9 or lower. It does not run natively in OS X, but they have come out with a 2.0 version. The 1.0 version does have good optimization and defragmenting properties, but the 2.0 version has included Alsoft's Disk Warrior. Makes one wonder why Symantec would share the spotlight with another software company. I know why but will remain silent at this time...
