5.0 out of 5 stars Best of Norton Firewalls
I have bought, installed, uninstalled and thrown away 2 different Norton Internet Security suites. I felt totally unprotected by both, the last being 2009. They dont offer you any controll at all. This is the firewall I always go back to.(2006 Personal Firewall and 2006 Antivirus) I can enter exactly the private info I want protected and feel safe that it is. If your even...

1.0 out of 5 stars Dismal - No Longer a Symantec Customer, December 23, 2005
This review is from: Norton Personal Firewall 2006 (CD-ROM)
Gave up on Norton Antivirus last year, that now includes the Firewall.

My subscription to Norton Firewall 2005 expired recently; bought the 2006 version. Oh my how things did not work after the 2006 install; how cryptic their help, that help in english (my translation) reduced to re-install not just the Norton Personal Firewall 2006; but also what Symantec termed, 'suspected other programs' on my PC not allowing Norton's firewall to work properly.

Well, wrote off the cost of the Norton 2006; went with a competitor product; well rated; one install, everything worked from the get go.

Bye Symantec, bye Norton..., liked you for more than a decade; but you are so abysmal now!

1.0 out of 5 stars Norton 2006 is a Disaster, February 4, 2006

Beware Norton 2006. I have used Norton Antivirus (and more recently Internet Security Suite) for at least 5 or 6 years. I needed to renew my Norton 2005 subscription recently, so I downloaded an upgrade to NIS 2006, paid by credit card, and started the install. Huge mistake...I should have done some internet research first. Bottom line, the installation never worked, uninstall never worked, and worse, it corrupted my registry. Finally I was forced to reinstall Windows XP and all of my major applications that write to the registry, a lengthy and frustrating process. I had tried every trick and workaround I new of or could find on the web, and I am not a novice on computer hardware and software. I then contacted Norton for a refund, followed their instructions on how to apply for it, and got no response whatsoever. After a month of repeated attempts, I then contacted my credit card company, who refunded my purchase price. As far as I know the credit card company is still battling with Norton. Norton used to be tops, but has slipped on software quality and customer service to the point that I would never recommend them until there is some serious reform. The F-Secure suite I am now running has worked perfectly from the outset, so I will probably never go back.

1.0 out of 5 stars Norton Personal Firewall 2006, February 21, 2006
This review is from: Norton Personal Firewall 2006 (CD-ROM)
Purchased the 2006 firewall.
Product installed easily
Product will only recognize Norton Anti-Virus.
If you wish to use another brand this will cause an error to be registered on your firewall. Called their help line. they first told me to remove my anti-virus because it was a combo package.
It is not a combo. Second call they told me in very poor english that they only recognize their own product for and anti-virus. Be carefull with this product. It can be a big waste of time and money.

1.0 out of 5 stars If you want a DISASTER, buy this product, January 22, 2006
This review is from: Norton Personal Firewall 2006 (CD-ROM)
I wish I had read these reviews before I bought Norton Personal Firewall 2006. I had to renew my Updates subscription, so I thought I would upgrade from NPF 2003, to NPF 2006. Seemed simple enough.
From the moment it was installed, this program was unstable. It significantly slowed down my system. The start-up time went from less than 2 minutes to 4-5 minutes. Tech support took about 8 days to get back to me, and then did not reply to my question but instead gave me a long list of tasks to perform that according to them would solve the problem. When I emailed back to clarify, I have never heard from them again. I tried most of the so-called fixes without success. I uninstalled and then reinstalled the NPF program, only to discover that now the Norton Antivirus program was corrupted and would not download virus definitions during Live Update. Luckily I was able to uninstall NPF 2006, and Norton Systemworks 2003, and then reinstall Systemworks 2003 and NPF 2003. My computer is pretty much back to where it was before the upgrade - with a couple of new annoying glitches that I can live with. I spent parts of 4 days, and all day Saturday dealing with this. I think I was lucky it turned out as well as it did. User Reviews of other Norton products tell similar tales of woe. From what I can gather, there is not much difference between the previous years versions. The 2003 versions of NSW and NPF work just fine.

My advice-" if it ain't broke, don't fix it". I do not recommend this product, or any other Norton 2006 "upgrade".

1.0 out of 5 stars GOOD FOR SLOWING COMPUTERS NOTHING ELSE, March 25, 2006

This review is from: Norton Personal Firewall 2006 (CD-ROM)
I have used Norton Internet Security for some years, I have found that it slows your computer down and some times causes it to crash. The worst thing of all i have found is that it does not stop all virus, worms or anthing else. If it does find them it can not always get rid of them. I have down loaded software off the internet for free and found that it does a better job. So if you are thinking of buying Norton Internet Security all i can say is don't there is better software out there for free. I won't be buying another symantec product again.

1.0 out of 5 stars Please listen to others' bad experience: NPF 2006 WILL PISSES YOU OFF, February 4, 2006
This review is from: Norton Personal Firewall 2006 (CD-ROM)
I talked to a friend of mine about Norton Fierwall and he told me not to install it, it will slow down your computer. I didn't listen. Why? I had read those favored reviews from pros (!?) that this is the best fierwall. Well this is the worst firewall and the worst software I've ever experienced. Please listen people, you'll regret it if you won't.
This crappy software has crashed several times on my computer. It freezes and you can do nothing but unplug your computer!!! Yes, unplug your computer is the only way to unfreez it, I hate it. It blocks internet explorer and when I open it and click on configure in Fierwall tab then click the Programs tab and try to change the settings for internet explorer, it freezes and Windows XP can't close it by End Now command. You'll have to unplug the computer. Another irritation is that it tells you a remote system is trying to access your computer; you say "Block Always"; it says a remote system is trying to access your computer; you say "Block Always"; it says a remote system is trying to access your computer; you say "Block Always"; it goes on and on and on...It doesn't understand what 'Always' mean. Yet another one: your computer gets extremely slowed down, I mean unreasonably, awefully.

Solution? UNINSTALL IT. Get ZoneAlarm basic firewall for free which is much much better. Thank God I didn't pay retail price for this ugly pissware. I will never go back to any Norton product ever.

1.0 out of 5 stars What a Joke, December 27, 2005
This review is from: Norton Personal Firewall 2006 (CD-ROM)
Stay away from this buggy "frustration"-ware. I had Firewall 2002 installed prior and everything worked well. I moved up to 2006 and what a disaster. Randomly it will alert me that my isp is trying to access my computer when I try to browse a page. After the alert, I am locked out. I can not access the web until I disable Firewall. Great. Don't waste your time debugging their mess. Buy something else.

1.0 out of 5 stars Norton SystemWorks, June 10, 2006
This review is from: Norton Personal Firewall 2006 (CD-ROM)
After installing this on a corporate IBM laptop the system would freeze after booting. There was no way to recover except by repeated forced shut-downs and learning how to get to the install disk to de-install as fast as possible. Unfortunately the de-install does not take place quickly enough and the system freezes in the middle of the de-install. What a disaster of a product!!!!! I remains to be see if I have ever recover my corporate laptop ...
