For years, power users have understood the secret of mastering hard drives--hard disk partitioning. Dividing a hard drive into several partitions lets you efficiently organize operating systems, programs, and data. Until PowerQuest's PartitionMagic came along, modifying partitions was a nightmarish task demanding that you back up your data, delete existing partitions, create and format new partitions, reinstall the operating system, and, finally, restore the data (which hopefully wasn't destroyed along the way). But PartitionMagic greatly simplifies the task, putting partitioning in the reach of everyone.
The one that started it all, PartitionMagic ($69.95) is still the best dynamic disk-partitioning and file system conversion tool you can buy. The 4.0 version, introduced last fall, added a raft of features, including the BootMagic multiple-boot utility, several new wizards, a new interface, support for 20GB or larger hard drives and the ability to convert a partition's file system from FAT to FAT32 and back, or to NT 4.0's NTFS. Our favorite new feature is batch operation, which lets you select and combine several partitioning and conversion steps at once without having to wait for the process between each step. On the downside, the BootMagic utility is a real disappointment; it doesn't support multiple operating systems within a single partition, and it does a bad job of helping you add a new OS to your computer. In addition, the new wizards and glitzy interface don't add a jot to the usefulness of the product. We also wish for Win2000 support and the ability to convert from NTFS to FAT. Even so, nobody does dynamic disk partitioning like PartitionMagic.
