Striking lack of detail,

This book is a generalist narrative overview of the defenses of Washington during the CW. As a fan of Cooling's other more specialist CW works dealing with Forts Henry and Donelson and Early's 1864 raid, this book is a let down. There is no detailed assessment of the forts in terms of military engineering nor any useful maps or appendices at all. Coverage of the many heavy artillery and other specialized garrison units also is general at best. Specialists and readers with more than a passing knowledge of the subject would be better directed toward the companion volume "Mr. Lincoln's Forts" instead.

The book is very infantry driven. Unfortunately, if you are looking for cavalry information, you will only find one good chapter. If you are looking for Washington DC fortification info, you'll find it replete with facts,
