5.0 out of 5 stars O(+> the future of prince to be the artist!
A very uncanny Blend of music! this C.D. should display a HIGH funk Warning! It was ecclatic and breath taking! With the track "my name is prince" the beginning of prince's name troubles! probably a message to then record lable "warner bros" and the suberbly funky "sexy M.F" which has the essence of james brown in it!. And with ballads that...

This was the album that hinted towards his dislike with his contract with WB. Now in my opinion most of these songs on here are "Fillers" in an attmept 2 fulfill his obligation 2 WB. But with his love of music he still had 2 leave GEMS. "Love 2 The 9's" is one of my ALL TIME favs from Prince. "I wanna Melt With U" is decent also. With segues from Kirstie Allie (a true Prince Fan) makes seeing Prince in a different light. Then u have "The Continental" which is kinda bad in the beginning UNTIL the tempo slows down and Carmen Electra makes her 2nd appearance on the album (she was also in 2 The 9's" and she is the female speaking voice in these 2 songs) ,maybe because Prince realised she CAN NOT sing and he wasted $$$ on her debut album? Hmmmm. But when Carmen and Prince begins the convo (on answering machines) the song gets good. I never liked "7" sorry bt that is just me. But another one of my all time Prince favs; "And God Created Woman" But very few epic songs on this bad boy!!! In fact only 2... But then again he was fulfilling the contractural agreement. New Prince people... it is up 2 u... die-harders like myself are welcomed 2 join my likes. But do not judge my boy from this album. Get it AFTER u are a Prince fan.

And with ballads that show the supreme flow that prince loves to show (love 2 the 9's,blue light, and god created woman and sweet baby inspired by Mayte prince's ex wife, and supreme rock songs like "the morning papers" and the songs that show the true essese of prince showing his funk, his thirst for new sounds and his plentiful lyrics( the max, wanna melt with you and 7) this C.D gets 5 stars BEcause it is one FUNKY Album! Prince does it again!
"Prince O pop" not a "Man O War"

5.0 out of 5 stars Sometimes the "best's" are overlooked, August 3, 2001

In general this is one of the more underated discs, the fact is this is one of the best! The album may have some throwaways, but they build you up to the next great song. My all-time favorite Prince song is "The Continental". Other hits include "Damn U", "7" & "Sexy M.F.". Another excellent album!

5.0 out of 5 stars Smooth Funk Rythym, March 15, 2001
This review is from: (Symbol) a.k.a 'The Love Symbol Album' (Audio CD)
I can't get enough of this album. I listen to it and the Grafitti Bridge soundtrack all the time. The reason that people have a hard time with Prince is that he is telling stories more complex than we are used to hearing in the music of our culture. Witness Thieves in the Temple and Seven. This is epic poetry to music. Their themes are more akin to Sci-fi or Fantasy fiction than pop music which rarely leaves comic strip pscho-drama levels and rarely if ever excels beyond soap opera themes.

If you want music to lose yourself in this is it. With a healthy helping of Prince's ever present eroticism this album holds the attention of both your brain and your hips.

3.0 out of 5 stars Strange Album, February 8, 2001
This review is from: (Symbol) a.k.a 'The Love Symbol Album' (Audio CD)
The album's strange symbol title was adopted by Prince as his official name a short time after the album's release. The album contains some of the strangest music in Prince's career. The album is something of concept album and it has some interludes with a woman's voice (Kirstie Alley) that explain this concept. The songs are pretty good including the super funky "Sexy M.F.", "The Morning Papers", "The Flow", "7" and "Blue Light". The album is fairly inconsistent, but the sheer strangeness of it makes it worth a listen.
