Editorial Reviews

Review

As an interpretation of the temperance movement, the book is an unqualified success . . . in an area of study that has been characterized by either glib statements about the social bases of movements or fixation on phenomena of goal displacement and the iron law of oligarchy, this study represents a signal contribution.American Journal of Sociology --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent sociological review, October 24, 2005
This book has less to do with alcoholism than it has to do with being a basic sociological primer. Gusfield explains basic terminology and walks the reader through a sociological evaluation that could be used to examine any topic. Excellent!
