I suppose the title refers to the fact that even with only five main characters and two supporting, there are no fewer than seven different pairings of these people represented in the movie. Whereas in most of your basic romantic dramas you might get just one or two actual romances, and more only by covering an extended period of a single character's lifetime, this movie compresses a wide variety of relationships into a single work.

To further complicate matters, at least two characters go through dramatic changes in their habits and desires, serving to provide even greater variety to the story. The least likely, most "shrinking violet" character type is the one who wound up (at different times) with all three of the main female characters. I guess the most notable thing missing from this menagerie would be a homosexual relationship. Maybe that just wound up on the cutting room floor. :)

Other than that, I'd say the various relationship issues explored by the film are fairly familiar. No one's breaking any particularly new ground with the writing or presentation of the film. Though I have to admit, I was left wondering somewhat whether as with the book written by the character Richard, the shrinking violet, this movie is in some way autobiographical, making Richard's book and related marketables somewhat of a "story within a story" sort of deal.

Still, the movie is reasonably well-produced and well-acted, and it's a nice change of pace from the usual Hollywood "rom-com" or suspense movie (which is where the love stories from that town usually head). It's all about the relationships, so if you're not into that kind of story it's probably better to give this movie a pass. But otherwise, it's not nearly as painful to watch as the other reviewer has suggested (even the ending, which frankly I didn't find all that surprising, never mind inconsistent).

It was boring and I felt like I was watching a student film. The ending made me want to punch someone. UGH!
WTF?
