Book Description

March 1, 2005
On the streets of Minneapolis, Sarah has worked everything from vice to missing persons. But six months after the death of a small-town criminal in rural Minnesota, Sarah is still protecting the identity of a killer. And now a zealous D.A.’s investigator has come to town, determined to make an arrest. With her ex-partner half a world away and her husband in prison, only Sarah remains to face the consequences of last fall. Surrounded by colleagues who know her to be the suspect in a murder, Sarah keeps her demons at bay by involving herself in the troubles of strangers. Seventeen-year-old Aidan Hennessy was banished from his family by his father. Now Aidan’s twin sister is desperately searching for the brother she hasn’t seen in years. Although the case is out of Sarah’s jurisdiction, she sees a reflection of herself in the troubled, damaged family, and agrees to investigate. As she probes into their tangled history, Sarah begins to realize that the mystery of the Hennessys runs deeper than it appears. Then Sarah’s lieutenant gives her a simpler assignment: Track down a doctor rumored to be practicing medicine without a license in a housing project. But in Cicero Ruiz, Sarah finds a tough, wounded survivor whose moral code challenges her own ideas about justice…and whose hard-won life would be destroyed by an arrest. Now juggling two very different cases, both requiring a delicate balancing act between professional honor and personal feelings, Sarah soon has even more at stake. Caught up in a cat-and-mouse game with the investigator who wants to end her career, crossing one ethical line after another, Sarah increasingly fears that a misstep on her part will end not only in her disgrace, but in the death of one of those she has promised herself to protect.

About the Author

JODI COMPTON, like Hailey Cain, is “Californian in a way a lot of people are Californian; I was born someplace else.” Jodi has lived in California since the age of one, excepting a brief stint in Minneapolis. She is the author of two previous crime novels, The 37th Hour and Sympathy Between Humans. She currently lives in Northern California with her Lab mix, Lady Bird. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From AudioFile

Minnesota Detective Sarah Pribek finds herself the prime suspect in a murder. But not even the threat of an end to her police career can keep the empathetic Sarah from getting tangled in the problems of strangers. Sarah's sympathy extends to a highly dysfunctional family of youngsters, as well as to a paraplegic doctor practicing without a license. Marie St. Clair's narration is too low-key for this intense, intricately plotted novel. However, she does especially well when the story calls for dialogue. Her understated characterizations keep the novel's occasional lapses into melodrama under tight control. While this police procedural is not as riveting as THE 37TH HOUR, Sarah's character is tenacious and appealing. 4.0 out of 5 stars A TAUT, VITAL READING, March 21, 2005

Acting teacher Marie St. Clair gives a taut, vital reading to the second of the Pribek novels by Jodi Compton. Many impressed with Compton's first work will remember that Sarah Pribek is a Minneapolis detective who gives no quarter. Yet, she does have a soft side although she keeps it well hidden. And, she's given to introspection, this time out examining her code of behavior and even the law that she's called upon to enforce.

She takes a teenager searching for her lost brother under her wing, and investigates a man accused of practicing medicine without a license in a housing project. What she finds is a complicated individual confined to a wheelchair who brings healing to those in the tenement. She's forced to wonder whether his actions, which may be found illegal, are really immoral.

Along the way Pribek finds herself drawn to the teenager and her troubled family, while trying to avoid authorities who would take her badge away.

Listeners will feel both sympathy and empathy for a street smart heroine who tries to solve the world's problems as well as her own.
