A TAUT, VITAL READING,
This review is from: Sympathy Between Humans (Audio Cassette)
Acting teacher Marie St. Clair gives a taut, vital reading to the second of the Pribek novels by Jodi Compton. Many impressed with Compton's first work will remember that Sarah Pribek is a Minneapolis detective who gives no quarter. Yet, she does have a soft side although she keeps it well hidden. And, she's given to introspection, this time out examining her code of behavior and even the law that she's called upon to enforce. She takes a teenager searching for her lost brother under her wing, and investigates a man accused of practicing medicine without a license in a housing project. What she finds is a complicated individual confined to a wheelchair who brings healing to those in the tenement. She's forced to wonder whether his actions, which may be found illegal, are really immoral. Along the way Pribek finds herself drawn to the teenager and her troubled family, while trying to avoid authorities who would take her badge away. Listeners will feel both sympathy and empathy for a street smart heroine who tries to solve the world's problems as well as her own. - Gail Cooke |
