5.0 out of 5 stars Romantic April 13, 2013

Love to play this while I paint. It's richly rhythmic, lush, beautifully orchestrated, not always familiar. It's elevator music sure, but what of it?

4.0 out of 5 stars A beauty! May 16, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Instrumental albums can be very "hit or miss". The quality of the musicianship on this cd is outstanding: Ernie Watts (sax), Clare Fischer (piano), Jorge Calandrelli (keyboards, synthesizer, arranger and co-producer), Carlos Vega (drums), Neil Steubenhaus (bass), Sal Marquez (trumpet and flugelhorn), among others and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Ettore Strata. The album was recorded in London and Los Angeles and it uses the bolero as a vehicle for romance! Bolero classics like "Inolvidable", "La Mentira (Yellow Days)", Solamente Una Vez (You Belong to my Heart)", "No Me Platiques Mas" and "Perfidia/Sabor A Mi" make for "make out" music of the first order. Jorge Calandrelli's arrangements are so tasteful, exquisite, and glorious in their melodies, that's it's too bad this cd did not get a larger audience. An added treat are the liner notes by Mexican author and journalist, Javier Gonzalez Rubio, explaining the origin of the bolero and it's history throughout Latin American culture.
The quality of the sound is magnificent, great mastering, the strings sound like they're in your room!
My impression is that a lot of thought and work went into the making of this cd, too bad it doesn't have a wider audience, it's a beauty.

5.0 out of 5 stars The very best of Ettore Stratta September 10, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I purchased this cd at a Tower Record store on the near north side of Chicago. I am a Claire Fischer fan who is a wonderful but underrated pianist. I knew nothing of Ettore Estratta at the time. I must admit this is the best symphonic sound one could ask for, There is a bit of everything on this cd. There is a bit of Fischer's improvising compounded with some outstanding orchestral arrangements. Most songs are of the Spanish genre; however a great version of "What a Difference a Day Makes" and "You belong to My Heart" are two of the songs most people will recognize. A medley of "Perfida/Sabor a Mi" is a haunting arrangement. Besides Claire Fischer, Ernie Watt's saxophone is featured on many of the songs as well as Brian Monroney on Spanish and acoustical guitar. Mind you, I bought this cd around 1997 and it is one of my favorites even though I am a jazz fan - Oscar Peterson, Ella, Sarah, Stan Kenton, lots of Sinatra, Horace Silver etc. This recording is certainly unique. One the other hand the cd with Elvis songs by the same orchestra was a disappointment. A third cd of bossa nova songs also is very good featuring many jazz artists one of which is Al Jarreau.
