This review is from: The Symphonic Organ (Audio CD)
Played on NYC's largest pipe organ, Trafka's transcriptions are flawless and for me make the Copland and Mussorgsky more exciting, vivid and grand than in their original form. It is rare that this can be accomplished. I write this as a brass player who has played the Copland Fanfare many times.
The organ benefits from the luxurious acoustics and multi-dimensional space in St. Bartholomew's Church. Where else could a whole division of an organ be placed in a dome? Trafka, a virtuoso organist and a gifted composer and arranger, selects exactly the right registrations to reflect the symphonic underpinnings of the works. In so doing, he seems to use every stop in the formidable 225 rank organ. |
