Product Description

Saint-Saëns's reputation rests on a few popular works--Danse Macabre, Symphony No. 3, The Carnival of the Animals--but his output was far more vast and varied than most people realize. The Third Violin Concerto is one of the great Romantic masterpieces for the instrument, yet it's much less popular than it once was. Whatever the reasons, they certainly aren't Itzhak Perlman's fault, for he simply plays the daylights out of both this piece and Lalo's ever popular Symphonie espagnole. I'm always amazed, when listening to the Saint-Saëns composition, just how well-written it is, and how good it always sounds. Perhaps his level of sheer craftsmanship was so high that people lose sight of the music's genuine inspiration. --David Hurwitz

During my search for other recordings, I read the one really negative review of the Perlman rendition and was hesitant to purchase it.

His insights into the music, as well as his technical forte, his lyrical and sheer musicality of his performance, are beyond words.

Recently I heard the beautiful Lalo "Symphonie Espagnole" at a Chicago Symphony concert performed by the orchestra's concertmaster Robert Chen, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. However, I felt that it lacked somewhat in individuality. Therefore I went on a quest and purchased several different recordings of it by the following acclaimed violinists: Joshua Bell, Sarah Chang, and Kyung Wha Chung. I'm happy to report that the different recordings and readings are all wonderful and highly recommended. During my search for other recordings, I read the one really negative review of the Perlman rendition and was hesitant to purchase it. Judging from Perlman's great reputation and other wonderful recordings of his that I own, I proceeded to order the CD of the Lalo of which I'm reviewing. I am so happy that I did make this last purchase. As great as the other violinists on my other Lalo "Symphonie Espagnole" recordings are, Perlman really goes to the front of the line in my opinion. His beautiful intonation, amazing technique, and feel for this music (not at all self-indulgent) are just about as perfect as one can hope to get. So much so that if I were forced to keep only one of my Lalo "Symphonie Espagnole" CDs, this would be my choice. Coupled with the Lalo are equally beautiful readings of the Saint-Saens "Violin Concerto No.3" (with a sumptuous middle movement) and the Berlioz "Reverie et Caprice". I might add that not only is Perlman's playing great, but so is that of the Orchestre de Paris conducted by Daniel Barenboim. Lastly, the acoustics and sound of this CD are just as glorious as is the playing. Highly recommended.

Perlman does a great job of interpreting and expressing himself in the Symphonie Espagnole. He plays it with good tone and great technical ability, especially in the fast sections. The Concerto by Saint-Seans is a great addition to this disc, as it was originally written for Pablo Sarsate, the Spanish Violinist, same as the Symphonie Espagnole.

This is one of the best recordings of the Lalo Symphonie Espagnole or Saint-Saens Violin Concerto you'll find anywhere, plus, at a great value!

I wasn't very familiar with Lalo until I heard a composition on a local classical music radio station. I was instantly in awe. I bought the album primarily because of him, but have found Saint-Saens just as good. Though the cover may look corny (that was my impression at least), the quality of this disc is basically impeccable. Lalo and Saint-Saens are both such extraordinary composers, I've found it embarrassing not to have known them until recently.

Perlman's Lalo is incomparable. I had this recording on vinyl from the late 70's, which of course is long gone. I purchased a copy in the 90's but lost it a few years ago. I had to purchase it again, it's just too good not to have in my collection. There are other works Perlman recorded that I can't quite regard with as much enthusiasm, but his Lalo has no equal. I have "The Lalo" by at least 8 performers, including Heifetz, Zuckerman (which is good), Stern...yet there's just nothing to match Perlman's recording.

Perlman may not be a flawless performer, as this recording might reveal. It's the voice, the attitude and style that makes this the one Lalo to have. There is nothing on record like Perlman's 3rd movement. There must be an argument in this story; some woman has discovered her lover cheated on her and she's screaming and cursing in Spanish so fast she could spit fire at him. You can hear him try to lie his way out of it, but she will have none of it. She slaps him, she cries, she laments the loss, and he offers a tearful apology.

She considers it for a couple of heartbeats, but then slaps him in the face and leaves.

That's Perlman's 3rd movement.

Lalo isn't known for much, but if there's only 1 thing the world remembers any of us by, it should be something as grand and wonderful as the 3rd movement of "The Lalo" as performed by Itzhak Perlman.

this IS the Thing!! Barenboim and Pearlman!Orquestre de Paris, and its own music director!(well, Barenboim still had a healthy relationship with maybe the best frech orquestre then). if you are not familiar with french school, this CD is the best introduction, then you may like to hare a little Ravel and Debussy, and you will find Bizcet is as good as Lalo! this is a 5 star ablum, i reduce one because there's a better remastered version by DG on their 98' Century Collection(1980,Barenboim). the sound is much better, since the recording was realized by the year 80, and DDD was not such a mature technology yet. always better if be remastered later, isn't it? music first, that's right, but if a better sound is available, why not?!

This disc has some of my favorite works by Lalo, Saint Saens, and Berlioz-- for me an extraordinary combination in one disc! Barbenboim does a masterful job conducting the Paris Orchestre, but the laurels go to an iconic performance by Itzhak Perlman. His insights into the music, as well as his technical forte, his lyrical and sheer musicality of his performance, are beyond words. You just have to hear it.
