Fantastic Berlioz,

Possibly the greatest version of Symphony Fantastique recorded. Stokowski's string have a sheen and silky quality, and the brass have a bite that's truely exciting. Not to mention that it was recorded in glorious Phase 4 Stereo. Phase 4 just adds to the impact of the recording. Stokowski's tampering with the dynamics only adds to the dream like quality of the 2nd movement. Highly reccomended!

Leopold Stokowski was, quite possibly, the greatest conductor of the 20th century. He particularly excelled in ochestral showpieces. Berlioz's Symphonie Fastastique is just such a piece and Stokowski's performance of it is superb. There is no finer performance of this masterpiece. Unfortunately, this outstanding performance was not available on CD for several years, but now it is. Please do yourself a favor and get a copy while it's still available.
