excellent personal view of Nielsen, January 6, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Symphonies 1-6 (Audio CD)
This set contains several great recordings: the 3rd is among the best I've heard, with the Pastorale movement of that symphony clearly the best ever. The 5th is excellent, if not ultimately quite as dramatic as the best; the 4th is also excellent. The 1st, a favorite of mine, is let down slightly by somehwat sluggish tempos. But overall, it's an excellent set, and if at all possible, buy it for the 3rd, or buy the 3rd separately.

A Grand Recording!, October 31, 2002
This review is from: Symphonies 1-6 (Audio CD)
This is a monumental recording of all six Nielsen symphonies. The Royal Stockholm Philharnonic Orchestra performs to perfection this hugely grand and beautiful cycle under the batton of Gennady Rozhdestvensky. Just listen to the etherial voices of Solveig Kringelborn (soprano) and Karl-Magnus Fredriksson (baritone) in the final minutes of the Andante pastorale from Symphony No.3 and you'll soon be swept up to the third heaven. A glorious moment from a wonderful piece of music. The cover art is brilliant and liner notes by Robert Layton are imformative. This 1998 Chandos relese is a must have for lovers of beautifully recorded and peformed classical music.
