These three symphonies, Haydn's first for his new employer, Prince Esterházy, are generally conceded to be the most popular of his early works. As they should be, since they are among the very best non-Sacred music composed in 1761, a time when the symphony was still just emerging from an early identity crisis.

This is reflected somewhat here. Formally, symphonies may have evolved from the Italian opera overture. But there is another school of thought that they instead derived from the Italian concerto grosso. Works like these, which contain superb solo parts for the virtuosi of the band would tend to support that theory. As his first works in a new job, working from an idea suggested by The Big Boss, Haydn wrote wonderful solos for his orchestra members. These 'show-off' sections had to have endeared him with the new group right from the start!

The Apollo Ensemble, well known in Europe (they're Dutch) if not in America, are a period instrument ensemble par excellence. They toss off the difficult solos with apparent ease, and the playing of the group as a whole is spot on. Since I have every period instrument recording currently in existence to compare it with, I can say that to my ears, this is as satisfactory performance as I've yet heard. Highly recommended!
