5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful live performance and interpretation!, July 6, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Symphony 1 in D Major Titan (Audio CD)
After a recording of this magnitude, it seems unimagineable that the Houston Symphony is not more recorded. Given this is a live recording, the performance is flawless. Technically speaking, the intonation could not be better. Eschenbach brings out the colors that need to be to create a well balanced sound. Bravo to the fine horns and trumpets. All too often a performance is ruined by a clutter of unbalanced instrumental sound, and with this CD that is not a problem. All around, you cannot go wrong with this intense performance.

5.0 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD!, May 9, 2008
This review is from: Symphony 1 in D Major Titan (Audio CD)
This recording deserves so much more publicity, let alone it should remain in print! Out of the 30 recordings of Mahler's first symphony that I own, I rate this as a top choice.

The sound quality is unsurpassed. This is a live recording and I have studio recordings that don't sound nearly as good.

But the best is Eschenbach's interpretation. It is perfect for the Titan.

Pick this up if you can!

UPDATE: Honeck's recording on the Exton label is extraordinary and I would now rate this recording second to Honeck conducting the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra on Exton.
