I've owned this CD for years now, and it's been gathering dust (due to an initial rejection based on my first hearing) until recently, when I pulled it out again. I thought to myself

"This CD couldn't be as bad as I remember it." But we're all wrong at times.

As a professional orchestral musician with undergraduate and graduate study in my instrument, I can unreservedly say that this is not a bad recording-- for a group of high school kids.

And that's who performs on this CD- The Mormon Youth Orchestra. The CD makes no secret about the fact that it was performed by young people, and that's fine. But for this particular group of young people, performing the beautiful (and NOT simple) music of Howard Hanson is probably out of their reach. And it shows.

As a clarinetist myself, I can understand that Hanson's 2nd symphony (especially) has difficult clarinet parts, but my fellow clarinetists in this recording seemed to have been told not to play certain sections... Is it just me, or did the oboe soloist get lost at one point?... Intonation-- what? ...and an early entrance from the percussion seems to startle the entire orchestra, pre-empting them into a shaky ending of the lovely Merry Mount Suite. I hesitate to speculate what wound up on the cutting room floor...

Hanson's own comments end the CD, which may interest listeners and especially Hanson fans. He makes mention of The World Youth Symphony Orchestra at Interlochen. As an alumnus of that group who performed the Hanson 2nd Symphony at Interlochen, I think someone should have recommended W.Y.S.O. to record this CD in stead (if Hanson were insistent that the recording be made by high schoolers, that is).

So my advice is to search through the many wonderful professional CDs of Hanson's music, which are also available on Amazon.com.

Howard Hanson's ability to bring the Mormon Youth Symphony into blissfull harmony makes this recording one of the best anywhere, especially of "The Song of Democracy." Because the recording was made in the world famous Mormon Tabernacle in Salt Lake City, the acoutsics are unique and provide for an intriguing listening experience. The Mormon Youth Symphony and Chorus combines rare musical talent with refreshing volunteerism that contributes to a sound that is vibrant and strikingly melodious. Don't miss this rare opportunity to hear Hanson's work through a wonderful group of young musicians!

Superb! I got the CD in good timing, and the quality was excellent. I was in the orchestra, and it came out as I remembered it.
